Race doesnt have anything to do with it. Its because many minorities lack the OPPORTUNITIES that many white people have. By instituting affirmative action, less fortunate people have a chance. Its not like they're taking your spot to Harvard or anything. If I lived in a slum and had failure parents, how could i possibly be on the same level as the successful white people? This is just my opinion and i like A.A. cuz everyone should have a chance.

The only real thing this program promotes is racism.

By eliminating the sex. and race. part on a application, and base your recruiting on experience and education. You find that over time racism in general will decline.

This tactic should be used on both for jobs and Collage.
Also for financial aid. Should be based on income and not on race or sex.

You know I am right.

Actually, the percentage of African American applicants to Harvard and other ivy league schools is significantly higher than the percentage of white applicants who’re accepted. So, some people might argue that it does have an adverse affect on my chance to get into Harvard. If I applied and there was one open spot, and a slightly less qualified African American applied, he’d have the better chance of getting into Harvard.

On the flip side, his advantage isn’t necessarily my disadvantage. While the theory makes since I’ve yet to see a single study to demonstrate it. So, I still don’t see how affirmative action hurts white people. Still, that’s their perspective.

My problem with affirmative action is that it doesn’t work. African Americans still aren’t getting equal opportunity.

IMO, "Affirmative Action" is counter-productive. Not only does it draw attention to someone's race (whereas in an ideal world employment should be "colour blind") it also risks people saying "so-and-so only got that position because of his colour." Also, a perception that certain groups get special treatment can only lead to resentment, and thus racism.

I do agree with you there.

There other ways to go about doing things to help battle racism, affirmative action is not one of them.

Yeah...I'm pretty much on the same boat with anyone that thinks AA is retarded

I'm going to blab a whole lot about college -_- just to give those who care to read a head start. I have also hidden the whole thing because it was too long and may cause headache.

To me, Affirmative Action is patronizing and insulting at the same time and can create bad work ethic depending on the person.

well, AA might get minorities into colleges, but then they wont succeed there if theyre underqualified. a successful person from a second tier school will do a lot better than a failure from harvard. going to the best school doesn't necessarily mean u will be the best. in the end, if an underqualified person goes to a a high rank school because of affirmative action, then he is the one losing in the end

What about the -c to +d student known as bush.. He became a president even wen he just about failed out of school.. People say only resin he made it through was do to paying his way through.

my point is this D student was able to be president, wile A+ student in other schools had trouble finding jobs.

On another note for ever under-qualified person that makes it in their, one less person who is qualified gets his/her chance.

I also find affirmative action a bad thing, people should not be chosen for what they look like (others call it a race), but for what they are capable of.
I understand why affirmative action is used, but it will probably only hurt its own cause.
What if a black person is hired thanks to affirmative action over a more capable asian person, the black person might not reacht his bosses demands, what happens is that the boss is dissatisfied with him and reflects that on the next (black) person who tries to get a job at that company.
Choose people because of their ability's that way everything is Alllright... gigitty

Racism is racism, even when its used with the best intentions, its always bad, and we should always be against it.
