GAH! Actually it's Yin and Yan. It's been bastardized so much people have started pronouncing it ying and yang; ying and yan. At least yin and yang are closer since that matches the characters in the I-Ching when harmony is referenced. It compares by referencing the sun "yang" and the moon "yin" Grrr LOL

Here's my quick and dirty:
Derived from the I-Ching, the Yin and the Yan is based on the Taoist's naturalistic philosophy in the essence of harmonic balance between the Yin and Yan. The Yin and Yan are the interdependence of opposites. Both the Yin and the Yan are seperate entities. Yet, in order to function each is connected to other. Contrary to popular belief, the Yin and Yan aren't the name of a symbol but, represent a state of being or two similar but opposite functions. The symbol representing this is the Taijitu. The Yin symbolizes femininity, earth, darkness, cold, night, moon, passivity, and Yan symbolizes masculinity, heavens, light, heat, day, sun, activity.

Also like our eagle grasping the olive branches and the arrows, the Taijitu has positional meaning. E.g. when the eagle's head is pointing over the olive branches we are in a time of peace. When the head is over the arrows we are either secretly telling our countries people that war is imminent or it means we are in a wartime. The Taijitu with the light on the left and the dark on the right is the correct positioning. The other way around is just incorrect. Sideways with the white on the bottom in a gang symbol that means start fighting. Sideways with the dark down is just a standard gang sign. So be careful if you draw them.
