some colleges want you to write personal essays. But what can you really tell from a personal essay? it's still a shallow representation of an individual, though its better then the test, it still lacks substance.

AP courses are college level, thus aren't average highschool courses. That's why thier college credit. but in reality most kids dont fall into AP courses, because there is no preperation for it.U either know it, or you dont. peace over war

the tests don't give insight into a student's personality. the essay can help do that.
yes it is, but most colleges can't meet every single prospective student. that's not feasible. they will try judge you with what they have which is usually your GPA/class rank, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and personal essays.
some colleges require personal interviews, but those are typically private, smaller universities.

pre-AP classes are supposed to prepare students for AP classes. just like pre-IB classes prepare students for the IB path. yes it's true most high school kids never even take one, but it's not a know it or not know it situation. the point of an AP class is the teach you what you need to know to pass the AP exam and hopefully attain college credit. i've walked into a number of my AP classes like calculus BC, macroeconomics, psychology, etc. not knowing anything about the subject. the classes teach you everything you will need to know for the AP exam.

'Thank god I was given a chance. In high school I was a C student, teachers did not like me because I was an atheist and to them that made me as evil as they come. So they try there best to fail me. Lucky they can not change grades on the test.. thanks to the test I was able to maintain a C over all at least (that is because on those test I get 98 to 100 every time). It was hard for me to get into college took 2 years of trying , but Jerid your White... Sorry kids being white does not mean you get life handed to you. That is just racist bullshit. So after making enough money to go to college I work my ass off to just get in the door. And I had to work and go to school same time to pay for school in the end I had a GPA of 3.8 in My Metallurgical studies, this from a person that flunked out of high school English 2 times, and just about got kicked out of High School for questioning the science teachers understanding of the subjects she was teaching. (in the end proving her wrong as well... My win! and for that win I got 3 days of suspension) SO trust me wen I say I hated school and the god damn mindless people running it. (Never had that trouble in Germany only in America.)
But back to college story, the 8 years of college I took in the sciences, I was lucky even if my grades was up there, I just about dropped out many times do to having trouble making the money for the books and the classes. In the end I had to sell a lot of my belongings just to help pay for it. Now that I am out of college life is no more easy, at this time finding work in my field is next to-nill I also have skills in welding and other real manly jobs as well, but there no jobs for that as well, at least not in the towns around NY right now.

So what do I have to say about grades wen it comes to High School!?! Or recommendations from teachers!?! Fuck you and fuck that, they tell you nothing about the person or his skill levels. Not wen you spent half your life in school fighting with stupid people.....! Just some bullshit popularity contest.

Now look what you made me do!!! I started to rant!!

I know you weren’t being serious but that was kind of funny. “Thank God for that. I’m an atheist.” Just made me laugh.

Anyway, I quoted this section of your post because I hear these stories all the time but I never experienced anything like that as an atheist. Now, other children treated me like dirt. In middle school I was shoved into a wall and told that I would burn in hell for believing in evolution. Still, in my experience the only time people were rude to me about my beliefs was when I was rude to them about theirs. Even then I never had a –teacher- dock my grades for making fun of the bible.

I’ve also known several other atheists and none of them have experienced any such thing. Yet, everyone’s always going on about how society treats atheists like monsters and frankly I don’t see it. Society treats militant atheists like jackasses, because by and large they are, but society also treats evangelicals and radical right wing Christians like jackasses. Society treats anything extreme like shit. We’re willing to accept gays and straights but not transvestites or necrophiliacs.

This being said, I was in Washington state throughout most of my atheist phase and Washington state is pretty much a bunch of Chinese atheistic democrat communists… Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the point is that if I had gone through my atheist phase here my experience likely would’ve been different, at least from what I hear.

But, with that said, I actually had a teacher tell my cousin she was stupid for being a Christian and that Christianity was the reason she had a low self esteem. Funny, the well meaning teacher tells her that she’s stupid for her beliefs in an attempt to improve her self esteem? Lol. Anyway, her beliefs have nothing to do with her low self esteem. These days it's just good common sense.

Yes I had some bad experiences as a kid growing up, I had two teachers that went out of there way to even bully me and a few other students that did not think like she did.

Through school My best friend was a very smart Christian top of the class, I could debate with him about college level Biology all day long. He two was suspended from school for defending me from the two teachers. (In the end I do not hate Christians my best friend is one, but I do Not have respect for a lot of the crazy ones I met over the years.) ( I just met up with my old Christian friend from back in the old days. Last ten years he spent in college and now he works making DNA in a lab from nothing but the raw material. (That Christian best friend of mine will admit that he is 99.999999% sure that Evolution is how all life got where it is today. ) Even so he still believes in a god, just not in the same way he used to, he had to change his beliefs to fit with his understanding of the world around him and how it works. That is why 85% of all scientist are atheist, 12% agnostic Or deist in one form or another. Because the more they understand how the world works the less need for a god to be part of its workings.
But that is getting off topic. It is kinda funny wen two of the bad boys who always getting in-school and suspensions end up being the two scientist, wile the male and female listed as the most likely to secede in are class ended up a security guard for a casino. And a mother with 3 kids working burger king and has a dead beat drug dealer for a husband. (but then maby I went to a fucked up school up in this small town in NY.) ( I know my friend was so advance because he was home schooled on up until high school.)

lol well sorry to hear your story but you have to admit that most students that performed and behaved well in high school do the same in college. otherwise colleges wouldn't consider those kind of students as prospective students.

students that under perform and land in trouble are a gamble. either they completely fail and get kicked out of college just like in high school, or they do a 360 like you did.
