Hmm... because they're good looking and go their own path or whatever?
Sorta like Sasuke from Naruto?

It has to do with what people relate to. Most of us, if we haven't at least been emo at one time, have at least KNOWN someone who was totally emo, and as such, we can understand that character easily enough. My favorite characters are often the emo type due to my having a painful past. I see an emo character hurting, and showing why they hurt, and I think to myself "that was me all right" and I kinda nod to myself.

Part of enjoying anime is being able to immerse myself into it, and having a character I can relate to makes it easy to put myself in that character's shoes.

Those characters also help to add to the diversity of the personalities, which helps to give a show more depth.

Ugh, cant you just say depressed?, Emo is more a style then anything these days.
And no, it doesn't mean u cut your self, sit in a dark room and cry in the corner all day, you'd be surprised to know that most of us are against our fellow Emo friends from cutting them selves and what not =/.

Back on topic, a guess that guy above is me is right, it enables you to empathize with the character better. =)

I find the emo's characters seem to be the arrogant characters in the story.

Hate and misery can make you stronger but you'll lose yourself in the process. Perhaps, the reason why people took interest in such negative character because it is the pale reflection of their own sentiments toward the real world or the object of their trouble.

I totaly agree with this is .Most of my favourite characters are emo .Emo characters have more depth ..

Emo characters are becoming so overrated but it's not just in action animes but also in romance/drama animes

Ergo Proxy has an Emo aura to it especially with the lead female (hot). I don't care what the character is like so long as there appealing (more than just looks) and the anime is great, I'll watch it.

In fact watch Ergo Proxy and you're certain to enjoy it's depressing atmosphere that will strangely be happy. A paradox, though a really good piece of anime that will make you feel pleasant. Plus magnificent scenery and extraordinary ordinary moments.
