DPJ head Hatoyama casts ballot in early voting
Wednesday 26th August, 01:23 PM JST
TOKYO —
Democratic Party of Japan President Yukio Hatoyama cast ballots Wednesday in early voting for Sunday’s House of Representatives election. Hatoyama, widely tapped to become prime minister if the DPJ seizes power, cast his vote for the Hokkaido No. 9 constituency, where he has his residence certificate, as well as for the proportional representation segment of the election at a special branch office of Tokyo’s Ota Ward.
‘‘I just cast a vote that could help make history,’’ Hatoyama told reporters. ‘‘I would like many people to savor the moment of change in Japanese politics.’’ Opinion polls have suggested that the DPJ holds a clear lead over the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and a change of government is seen as increasingly likely after the upcoming election of the powerful lower house.
