Inoue Mao heading to US for filming

"My Darling is a Foreigner" to be filmed at Presbyterian Church, Mindowaskin and at E. Dudley house.

The Town Council will be approving a film permit from High Field Entertainment to shoot a Japanese language romantic comedy in town on Oct. 1 and 2.

The film, which is shooting half of its four-day U.S. schedule in Westfield, will be shot on the lawn of the Presbyterian Church, in Mindowaskin Park and at the Rudlow residence at the intersection of E. Dudley Avenue and Lawrence Avenue. The filming will likely include some minor disruption to the sidewalk in front of the church and to the area surrounding the house.

Takuma Hayashi, the film's production supervisor, said the film, which will be shown in Japan, chose Westfield after consulting the state film commission for communities. The film is based on a popular comic book in Japan, in which a Japanese cartoonist falls in love with a man from New Jersey. He said state film officials mentioned Westfield because of the church.

"This town was the first proposed by the New Jersey Film Commission because we were looking for a beautiful church," Hayashi said.

Council members expressed some concerns with regards to the logistical aspects of filming in town for those two days. The filming on Oct. 2 at the Rudlow residence will be from 2 p.m to 7 p.m., raising concerns about traffic due to school being let out and then commuting. Councilman Sal Caruana suggested the film try to change production times on those days.

Hayashi said the production company has been working with the local police to handle traffic concerns and will be parking most equipment at the Presbyterian Church parking lot in order to reduce congestion on E. Dudley. There will be a shuttle service between the church and the Rudlow home. Some vehicles will be parked at the residence. Hayawhi said the production company will be hiring at least two police officers both days to supervise the shoot and handle safety and welfare issues.

Councilwoman Joann Neylan expressed concern about the condition of the park and other filming locations after the shoot. Hayashi said the production company will be restoring the area to the original conditions when they are finished. Hayashi also said it is likely all meals served in the church's dining hall will be catered by Westfield companies.

The Council showed support for the project and for Westfield's latest turn on the big screen. The town has been a popular spot for filming, including the former NBC television series, Ed, which was largely shot in Westfield. Hayashi said many of the scenes in Westfield are critical to the entire film.

"One of our most important locations is the front of the Presbyterian Church," he said. "Our main characters will meet and embrace and it's a climax of the film."

I know this movie is based in a manga, and the manga is based in a real life story. So is because of that the production coulnd't make so many changes, and that including the actors. Because they are people which are saying Why the girl wasn't the foreigner? o r Why don't choose a most handsome boy?.

Wow, I feel bad for Jonathan with everybody calling him ugly. As a person who's read (and loved) the manga, I thought he was little *too* good-looking. I haven't seen the movie, but based off the manga, Mao won't be speaking much English at all and he should be fluent (the actual foreigner husband has been in Japan for over 17 years now and has a love of languages). I'm really interested in eeing how the manga carries over into a movie as the book is more like a compilation of short stories than a long on-going plot. If anyone is interested in buying the book it's on Amazon in English, but there are only like 2 copies and they're from marketplace sellers. Good luck. http://www.amazon.com/My-Darling-Foreigner-English-Gaikokujin/dp/4840132321/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1283222125&sr=8-1

Just finished the movie. It was pretty good. It has changed my mind. Jonathan is quite a handsome guy, pretty adorable as well. They did not look too awkward on the screen, you couldn't really feel the age difference. Also Inoue was as great as always. It was a good movie.
