Looking back in the 90s japanse car rival era...rx7s were vastly compared to supras, 300zx, 3000gt and such.

jza80 supras have more in common with the fd rx-7's, both rwd, packing twin turbo etc, (excluding the engine design differences -rotary vs inline 6- and weight difference) they're very similar, as up above said, 300zx twin turbos are comparable too.
i leave gt-r skylines out of the picture hence the different drive-train (AWD) and the lower powered, lower trimed models w/ rwd.

When you think about it...it didnt seem like a fair contest as bmw responded with the e92 m3. now i can understand if they used the 335i to counter with the A4, or if audi had used the RS4, then the M3 would be a good contender.

F that. You couldn't pay me to take a Genesis over a 370z. The 370z is a much better car compared to the 370z. The design is slicker, provides a more confident sportier exterior. The Genesis on the other hand literally looks like a bunch of features smashed together. Nothing really accents anything from the misplaced hood bulge, odd shaped headlight that contours the line of the grill.

I think the winner is clear on interior. The Genesis really lacks any kind of "oomph" inside. It looks like it tried to be a luxury car with it's interior. Which it is not, it's a sport car.

I have reason to believe the poster was referring more to the Genesis COUPE, not the Genesis luxury sedan. Please do not confuse the two, they're entirely different goals. However, they do share the same platforms and the V6 engine...

Camaro vs Mustang, a 4 decade old rivalry that continues to burn today.


but I much prefer my type of cars, rally cars

STI vs EVO, almost 2 decades of rivalry. With the new STI in hatch form, the EVO has to follow suit.

Previous generation of any car can always have rivals that is on par with said car...but wont make any sense to compete its newer facelifted model...

from your interpretation, its like taking the very same 3 series platforms e46 vs e90..they're different generation, not in direct competition. but should rather rival other luxury sedans from other makes.

SPORT COMPACT CAR (which is now morphed with "modified")

did just that.

they would modify a old gen and put it against the newer generations.

EX: um, a 2nd gen integra vs the 3rd and 4th generation integras( 4th being the rsx)

same with miata( i actually have that issue).

but yes it does exist.

if a fc was vs a fd, he'd definitely would want to prove that the fc is still good enough to compete and dominate the fd.

but when your talking groups, they'll stand as one.

rotaries vs v8's or rotaries vs 4bangers...well you get the idea.

Previous gen vs current gen comparisons have always been done...but i dont see that as "rivalry"..just a side by side of how newer models stack up with their older counterparts.

My first car was a hand me down 1971 vw super beetle. It was slow, cold, ugly and noisy, but lots of fun. It's rigidity, cheap parts, small size, light weight, 50 years of modification and similarity to porsches offer up quite a bit of potential.
