Japan introduces its doll traditions to Cambodia

Wednesday 02nd September, 04:37 AM JST

PHNOM PENH —

Japanese dolls were introduced for the first time to Cambodia on Tuesday as part of activities to mark Mekong-Japan Exchange Year 2009. At the launch of the Japanese Dolls Exhibition in Phnom Penh, Kazuo Chujo, a councilor at the Japanese Embassy, said he hopes many Cambodians will enjoy seeing the traditional, beautiful Japanese dolls that will be exhibited until Sept 21.

According to Chujo, Japanese dolls are characterized by serene and delicate facial expressions and beautiful colors that show the richness of ancient costumes and pageantry. At the exhibition, about 70 dolls depicting Japanese traditions such as the ‘‘Hina Matsuri’’ (Doll Festival) and Noh and Kabuki dramas are featured. For Mekong-Japan Exchange Year 2009, various cultural events such as academic symposiums and youth programs are being conducted in Japan and Mekong-region countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar.

What a great way to rub it in their faces! Hey, look at these wonderfully over priced dolls, aren't they pretty? Don't worry kids, with the economy and poverty level of Kampuchea as it is, chances are, you may be able to buy it in seventy-two years. Ha, Ha! For the record, I am a Khmer (not really, my grandfather being Teochew, and my grandmother being Teochew, giving birth to several children in Cambodia).

Cambodia, or Kampuchea, is located in south east Asia. It is surrounded by Vietnam, Laos, and that one place people go to to cut off thier wee-wees or have sex with boys in dresses without wee-wees.
