No you don't. Other things, maybe - but not anime and manga. I've been to japan. It's not the otaku mother fucking disney land it's cracked up to be. Unless you were fluent in japanese and absurdly wealthy, anime and manga wouldn't mean a damned thing to you.

Honest to god, I prefer the american anime subculture to the japanese, and its not just the language barrier.

FIRST - no censored porn. Ever been to huge ass freaky porn store where everything is pixeled, barred or blurred out? Be it hentai, live action, doujinshi, whaterever? AND ON TOP OF THAT people buying it for absurd prices? I have. I'll take my american pr0n and hentai imports any day.

SECOND - You ever pay $60 for a new anime DVD? You will in Japan. Bend over and grab your ankles if you really want to know what it's like to buy anime in japan.

THIRD - It's japan! anime and manga must be everywhere! Manga... is damned near everywhere. That is true, and it is dirt cheap. BUT unless you can read japanese, it doesn't mean a god damned thing. Anime? Just like the states, you have to go to the same damn sources for a very similar selection, all be it the japanese versions. They're just about 6 months to a year ahead of us, depending on the show. Gundam models and gashapon grow on trees but don't plan on finding any rare ass shit unless you dig for it.

I could keep going for a while, but I'll stop there.

There are cool things for an anime geek to do in Japan. Unless you go to Tokyo (or some other major metropoliton area) - or are fluent in japanese - don't plan buying a ton of anime/manga. Akihabara? Sure, tons of cool shit there, but you may rethink your love for anime after some time there. Most places? About like the states, except for manga being everywhere and popular anime being primetime on TV.

Cool things to do in Japan - The food is amazing (I can't emphasize this enough), when school lets out it's a "special" experience, it's awesone seeing the culture in action, I about flipped out the first time I heard the walk signal song go off, lots of little things like that. If you can seperate yourself from the whole anime thing, japan is ALOT of fun.

The japanese people themselves are cool too. They're the friendliest, nicest people I've ever met, and I've been around a bit (about a dozen countries).

One final warning about japan... if you think american white guys who emulate rappers are annoying... you have no idea....

I don't mean to lash out at you, buts its a pet peave of mine for ignorant gaijin to do all the nipon worship crap. There are certain areas of japan (like Akiba) that meet the american anime geek's expectations, but they're rare, and japanese otaku... are very special people. I would much rather hang out with the obssesive yaoi fangirl jacked up on pocky than the average japanese otaku any day of the week.

I may toss more on this later if I feel motivated enough and people are interested.

Who would want to go to Japan for the anime merchandise? The DVDs almost never having english subtitles. Those import DVDs that you find in specialty stores and online are not from Japan, they're from Hong Kong made illegally. If I were to go to Japan, it would be for the arcades and for the cultural experience....and the really fast train

hell yeah, i forgot about the arcades. they remind me of the way arcades used to be in the US (sort of). the arcades over there are huge and filled with all sort of cool games. taiko drum master in the arcade can't even compare to the crappy US version. Beatmania? Drum Mania? You don't even want to know what your missing out on. They have alot of wierd games too (I saw a dog walking simulator over there...), and alot fo gambling/pachinko type deals as well. Only thing I didn't like was all the smoking (mainly in the gambling/pachinko areas), but all those wonderfull schoolgirls made up for it.

Pachinko is fun to do, the only sad thing is that its illegal to play for money (dont ask me why) In order to get money, you have to be good at pachinko and once you get a certain ticket from the counter, you go across the street to a small store where they trade your ticket for money (perfectly legal)

Another thing..... anime dvd in japan are not 60 bucks unless you buy certain ones that cover different languages with subs and has all those extra things people can possibly want. A normal DVD with perhaps maybe one different language or two can cost to about 10 to 20 bucks depending on where you buy it...

I agree with Arx for fast trains at least..... A new magnetic train that they created in japan (dont have too much news on that though sadly) is about 3 to 4 times faster than thoughs normal trains people can take.. sad thing is that ticket cost a lot.

Dont know if people has even noticed, but many arcade games in america are originally from japan (not all but many) that are changed to fit americans. If you have money, you could easily spend an entire day at the arcades and not even be able to play half of the games.

I was quite specific when I said NEW (bolded and capslocked since no one on the internet ever reads qualifying statements) anime, since used and older anime is quite cheap. All said and done, most anime is much cheaper on DVD in america than in japan (especially with absurdly low online prices). Some NEW anime is as high as $60 a volume in japan. I never said all anime was $60, only that new anime can be bought for that much over there.

This is based on my expereinces gleaned over there after spending about 3 months in country. Did I live there? No. Did I spend longer than a typical vacation? Yes. Are my experiences a complete and total indicator of all that ever has been and all that ever will be indicitivice of japanse culture? No, but it's what I encountered during an extended period over there.

My friend, my friend, this is what the internet is for. It is childsplay to get a free program to recode the region format. Your computer is a toy AND a tool. (and a friend, to some people who'd probably rather not talk about it... jk)
