You have your opinion, I have my opinion!
This is a well used comment in this forum.

Let us look closer at this Ideal. First what this statement is insinuating that all opinions are equal.
Now if you think about it its far from the truth. Opinions are not equal so using this comment to end the debate is "bullshit. ( do to lack of a better word)"
Opinions are not equals!

That is like saying that the sky is blue because the sky is a Giant Ice dome like roof covering the earth. This opinion holds little to no Value because it is base on no evidence just plain uneducated ignorance.
What makes people think you have your opinion and I have my opinion is a good Point?
Opinions are not equals, if a opinion is base on evidence and well known facts, than that opinion should be respected more than an opinion base on "Blind Faith" Sorry the word fits..

It is those people in this forum non-the-less who use that statement to end any debate, allows them to save face.
But should people be allowed to use such a remark wen in any forum not just the ED.
I find it really hard to respect someone who would say the earth is flat, then wen you explain to them how that is not so, they use the you have your opinion I have my opinion comment as if that makes them just as right as you are. As if opinions are all equals.

Now what is your Opinion on Opinions.
And sorry about it coming out kinda like a rant.
This opinion thing just happens way to much in my opinion.

So we should only have a few opinions on a few things? Or only a few people should be allowed to have opinions?

Anyway, saying "you have your opinion and I have mine" line is just another way of saying "I don't know what I'm talking about so leave me alone."

LOL! that actually made me laugh out loud.

Anyway, my opinion on opinions is as follows:
opinions without a reason are pointless. It's like saying, I think [insert opinion] just because I think that.
Otherwise, opinions are fairly equal. A lot of people argue because of religious opinions.
Opinions based on religious beliefs are as good as opinions based on scientific fact, because to you, scientific fact may be more real, but to a religious person, their bible is a solid a fact as science. So let's respect each other and not dismiss any opinions that you deem "unequal" or "not up to par" with the opinions built on a solid scientific base, just because you don't believe in a certain religion.

conclusion: most opinions are fairly equal if you look at it from a neutral standpoint.

I was a very opinionated child because I read too much for my own good since I was just a kid. I read everything from newspapers, science journals, to military documents. That had gotten me into more trouble with adults than I can count on weekdays anime blocks. For it makes me as somewhat a kid that challenges the authority figures(that being the adults) by questioning something(OK, a lot of things) that they didn't know about. Of course I was just being curious as would all kids do, nonetheless I was often being punished for not backing down when I wasn't satisfied with the dismissals from those who didn't know the answers to my questions.

Now that I'm an adult, I'm just as opinionated as I was before if not more so, when I'm asking more questions to both adults and children alike. I guess some of us just never stop learning.

In my opinion, it depends to say whether the opinion is equal or not. If you're talking about undeniable things, such as the earth is round example, those who bear the opinion that earth is flat is indeed unequal because we know that the earth is a sphere.

Now, lets say that a particular food is liked by a person but not the second person. The second person can say that it doesn't taste good, because it isn't to his liking and it is his opinion. The first person may argue that in his opinion, the food taste delicious because of [insert reasons here]. If this is how the condition is, don't you think that both opinions are equal?

“I am entitled to my opinion” or anything similar is a phrase used to digress an argument, or to just end an argument due to indolence; in other words, red herring. People put forward this argument frequently in arguments as if it has some merit or is a valid response to a disputation. The truth is that it is not, and it is falsely interpreted due to the equivocation fallacy. People misinterpret this phrase. The term "entitlement" has two different senses. That is 1) an epistemic sense, and 2) a legal sense. The epistemic entitlement is an entitlement that is earned — where a person has a right to an opinion because it was well supported by knowledge and evidence; in other words, it is valid. In the epistemic sense opinions MUST be justified. The legal entitlement is the entitlement made by Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Thought, where anyone can hold any opinion that they want; justified or not. In other words, the legal entitlement is unrelated to whether it is a valid opinion or not. People have these two senses merged together, making it seem as if any opinion is justified. That is wrong. In an argument an opinion has to be justified, therefore the legal entitlement must be neglected, and the phrase does not refute nor justify anything, and keeps the argument at where it was originally standing.

Either way, using Freedom of Thought and Freedom of Speech as a response to anything is idiotic. Because those two entitlements were only made because of the endowments us humans have, and nobody has a duty to defend your entitlement, nor is it a crime to violate the entitlement. It is different from the right to life. This is because rights entail duties, and the right to life gives others the duty to not kill anyone. If we kill someone, we will be sent to court for violating the right. However, if the Freedom of Thought is seen the same way as the right to live, it would be our duty to let others keep their opinion. But we obviously do not, and on the contrary, we often have a duty to try and change their opinion. An obvious example is: You are about the cross the street with a friend. A car is coming yet your friend still takes a stride into the road. Knowing that she is not suicidal, you infer that she is of the opinion that no cars are coming. Are you obliged to let her keep this opinion? I say no.

Trust darkphoenix to really hit the Crunchy forum with something so simple yet so smart. To be honest, i am not sure whether I understand this.

Basically do u mean that opinions from different people are different and such a statement as 'You have your opinion, i have mine' does not equate to proving that ones opinion is of the same level as another opinion or a finishing statement to an argument that both are equally right or one is better than the other?.

From what i see on past events in the news, u can show people the facts and change their mis-opinions, explain them clearly, but if they don't want to listen and only consider their opinion as more important, there is little much that can be done. The only thing we can do is be patient and try again or ignore them as the other 98% idiots on the globe, lolz.

Just wondering what was the point of this forum. lolz.... and don't say 'just trying to get your opinion'.

You know there should be a topic in ED just about exactly how the sky is blue. It'd be a metaphysical thread.
Technically it could be an illusion that the sky is blue because of the structure of our eyes relates this bluish color to that of other relatively blue colors like blue colors and blue tables. Perhaps there is no such thing as the color blue and this concept was entirely mind made and was just formulated in our heads because of the way the light reflects off these objects are all similar. Perhaps if we were to put these three things into a different kind of light, let's say a neon light as opposed to a incandecent light, they would all give off a different color. So in this case the color blue is just a constuct of our mind and doesn't really exists as a permanent property of an object, but rather just what the object may possibly give off given specific situations.

Lols, metaphysics.
