Drizzt! hahahahaha!
I personally prefer the 15th century pollaxe to the Danish axe, but that's me. It's the extra pointy bits that stick out that make it a little more versatile.

Medieval knights were not slower than samurai. This is a misconception that Hollywood movies gave us because of really bad inept scholarship from the Victorian era. I have seen with my own eyes men fighting in 35 kilos of steel European style armour get knocked down and then get back right up again unaided. If the armour was so heavy and unwieldy, they would have abandoned it's use.

Who would use something in battle if it would get just them killed?

agreed... they claim to be arrogant people who fight for the holy war yet they are just stupid wimps with armor. nothing special with them, just some arrogant armorclad giants. i guess the fodder orcs in LOTR were better than them...

In sword combat neither strength nor speed are as important as timing.

The Spartans are not Gladiators. They were a very strong nation known for being valiant and cunning. Had circumstances been different they would have survived longer.

The Roman army also used cunning battle strategies and tactics. Thus they are superior. I cannot compare between the Roman Army and the Spartans. They probably pretty much on the same ground. Roman Army = large number. Spartans = exceptional valor.

Whatever the case, the Gladiators are inferior against both. They were mostly criminals, had no military training, and their experienced were limited to the Colosseum.

No but you said that the Romans were bad... Circumstances? You mean the stupid selective breading and relying on people who hated them utterly to form their army plans?

Don’t forget ballistae!

So basically all they did was fight for thier lives? How does that make them bad at fighting?

erm..okay. A little bit too much hatred though (they weren't all that bad; just that the empire got really huge and bad politics got it to crumble down).. so I'll stop at "Salah-al Din rocks"

Yea, this is true. They are actually just around the same speed. Just that the most of the samurais focused more on sword fighting techniques.

nah... none of those euro knights can par with miyamoto muzashi, i think sasaki kojiro would be better than any one of them.

No, I said this:

"Gladiators are even inferior to the main Roman army who use special techniques in battle, eg. the Phalanx."

...which means that the Roman Army who use military techniques are better than the Gladiators.

Its not about fighting for their lives that made the Gladiators bad at fighting. Its the lack in training, knowledge in military techniques and battle experience. Most of them are just the ones who've survived thus fur in the arena. Could be skills, instinct or just plain luck.

Maximus Meridius wasn't a trained Gladiator. He was a Centurion and a General in the Roman Army.

Bad circumstances refer to treachery and politics.

This isn't supposed to be about which culture is better. It's supposed to be why we think a knight or a samurai would win in one to one combat.

We should decide on which type of knight we mean and what kind of equipment he would have and how the samurai would be armed.

Tyrfing, do you know how strong a Japanese bow is compared to a Welsh longbow? I think the Welsh bows were up to 150lb pull. A longbow arrow with a bodkin point could pierce plate armour once in a while.

If the samurai and the knight charged at each other, the samurai could use his bow against the knight. If the knight or his horse didn't get killed, the knight could use his lance on the samurai. If the samurai or his horse didn't get killed, then let's say they could fight on foot.

do you people forget that samurais have their lances called naginata?
