Do you remember the last article speculating about Shida Mirai having what it takes to get an Oscar? Back then it was all just talks by the Santa-Barbara International Film Festival organizers who were wowed by Shida’s great job at her first international film festival, but now it seems like that those future expectations might become reality very soon, at least for the general "Best Foreign Language Film" award.

The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan decided to submit Kimidzuka Ryouichi’s "Nobody to Watch Over Me" for the American Academy Awards that are happening in March next year again. Every year, the academy chooses one foreign movie to get the "Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film" and as you all should know, "Okuribito" (Departures) was able to win the very first golden Oscar for a Japanese movie in history.

"Nobody to Watch Over Me" is based on the cult series "Bayside Shakedown" (1997) and tells the story of a detective who has to protect the family members of a murder suspect from the merciless media and general public. It truthfully and in an original way shows the state of Japan’s modern society and how much strength a man needs in order to spare a family the cruelty of that society. Everything was filmed with a hand camera to intensify the force of the movie even more. Starring actor Satou Kouichi once again did a fantastic job in brining his role alive and there are no more words necessary to describe Shida Mirai’s performance as the younger sister of the murder suspect.

The academy will be checking through all of the foreign movies in November and in January they are going to announce the final 5 nominates. If "Nobody to Watch Over Me" manages to become one of the final 5, you better get some kind of red pen and mark the 7th of March in your 2010 Shida Mirai calendar (up for pre-order on most Japanese stores).
