well i think this thread could be potentially useful. We can discuss the morals of each saying and if it's true or erroneous. It helps us share about the most valued philosophy that you learn in life.

I'd say that this thread should be opened.. Unless there's another one already.

About the birds in hand worth more than two in the bush. I would like to discuss this moral statement further. Sure i get it.. it teaches logic to kids and tells them to be safe, but don't this mean that it tells them to be pessimistic about everything else in life too?

a bird in your hand worths more than two in the bush. What if in the bush there's a hundred birds? I'd say i take the chance and go for the hundred

I agree with supermalv that this is potentially a good topic. He has discussed "a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush", so why don't we all pick a saying and discuss it, or comment on someone else's discussion of a saying.

Most of the sayings on the list are non-traditional with the "bird in the hand" one being an exception.

I would like to add a couple more:

"Many hands make light work" and
"Too many cooks spoil the broth".

These are both traditional English ones, and appear contradictory to me. Can anyone else think of two proverbs which seem contradictory? Another example is:

"Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" and
"He who hesitates is lost".

For "a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush", I have always taken that to mean the same thing as "don't throw good money after bad" ie, you can be sure of what you've got (the bird in the hand) but unless you've actually got your hand on something (the 2 in the bush), it is worth less because you can't count it as yours yet - the bird in the hand can't fly away, but the ones in the bush might. Another similar one is "don't count your chickens before they're hatched".

And see that's the thing.. they tell this stuffs to kids man. While it is good to be safe, it also makes people too timid to take chances won't it? I just think this world is such a cynical world to live in because of stuffs like this.

It's like they are trying to educate us to *not* be optimistic. Know what i mean?
