Before the movie 'Milk' came out last year, I never knew who he was or even heard of him. Do you think people have been purposefully trying to keep everyone ignorant about him? I don't think they teach kids about him in schools.

When I did research on his life, it seemed like he was the gay version of Malcolm X. He made alot of great speeches http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvfexvihri8

Harvey Milk was the first openly-gay man to be elected to public office in the US in 1977. He was an amazing, charismatic leader and fought very hard for gay rights. He was assassinated one year later. Last year a pretty famous movie (I don't know how you guys never heard of it) was made about him called "Milk" and Sean Penn won the Oscar for best actor for playing him. Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 12, 2009 for everything he did.

Nope, haven't heard of him. Amazing speech, though. I might look a bit more into his stuff. I looove stuff like that, lol.

Going to be a Debby Downer though. I don't think you should elect someone because they're gay, but because they're the better candidate. Being gay doesn't always mean being smart or being fit to be voted in. But I'm just over analyzing.

Well obviously we shouldn't decide who to vote on based on candidate's sexual orientation (the same with race). But he was a very intelligent and outstanding politician, you should watch Milk and see how he got himself elected and what he did.

The joke at the gay people on the back of the bus topic was ok cause it was funny, but this wasn't that funny and just stupid.

Honestly, when I began studying in the US as an 8th grader, I thought MLK day written on the school's calendar was "MILK day." I was like, "did they forget to add the letter i in Milk? wow. I can't believe there's a day in the US that is especially dedicated to milk!! "
So, on the next day, my smile was ear to ear. I was thinking that it would a free day in school.
Nope.
My history professor clarified that it's Martin Luther King, Jr. day.

gosh. I was really zoning out of reality thinking that MLK was MILK day, huh?
After winter break, there aren't holidays to look forward on the rest of the school days. Hence, after winter break, students are in school 5 days a week. So yea, that's where my Milk day thinking came up. lol

umm NO the joke at the gay people on the back of the bus is NOT FUNNY you don't get how it is to be discriminated by millions of people because of your sexuality. Unless you are gay yourself you will never understand the discrimination these people get.
