As the economic situation in the U.S. continues to worsen, I'd probably put, at least in my opinion, Canada on the top of my list. I acknowledge that other countries are suffering due to the current financial strain in the U.S., albeit, the effect is no where near as pronounced . Moving to a different country would no doubt get you caught up in culture shock, not knowing where to go, etc., but at this point in time, that would be a risk I'm willing to take, especially if the U.S. doesn't clean up its act soon. (I'm looking at you, Congress and Obama.)

America sounds like where it should be on that list, probably needs to be put a little further down though since the data is old. I can't believe I grew up thinking the U.S. was number one and all. I'm ashamed, then again, I grew up in an area where people still think the south is 'gonna rise again'... go figure.

Wouldn't Canada be better to live in regardless of wheather the US was in a financial tight spot or not?

I think that it really depends on the person because who's to say which country is the best to live in? People are different, they have different accommodations to go with.

Well, I don't know about any other Canadians who happened to pass by this thread, but as a Canadian myself, I certainly feel proud that so many people want to come to Canada!

For me, I would use the HDI as a basis to compare the quality of life between countries. Now, of course, the HDI is only a measuring tool to see how equal each person is between others in their country, so therefore, sometimes living in America will grant you an overall more luxurious and happy life (in terms of money). However, considering that I can personally live a happy life without much money, I'd rather go to Norway for the cultural and geographical benefits (they have some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see!)

In addition, other countries that I would like to live in are the following; France (because I speak French, and I also love French history and neo-classical French architecture), Italy (because I love Ancient Rome, carpe diem!), Montréal (because I am, of course, a proud Canadienne), and Switzerland (near the border with France, where the LHC is).

I would live in any capitalist English or Japanese speaking country. In other words: Canada, US, England, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.

Also, for anyone curious about it...

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) actually calculates the Human Development Index (HDI) with an equation.

There are three parts to it, one of which comprises of two other pieces. You take these three parts, weight them by 1/3 and then add them together to get the HDI of a country.

They are:
Life Expectancy Index
Income Index
Education Index

Income Index = ( log(countries PPP weighted income rate)-log(100) ) / log(40000)-log(100)

LE = (countries current life expectancy - 25) / (85 - 25)

Education index = 2/3 Adult Literacy Rate + 1/3 Enrollment Rate = 2/3 (Adult Literacy Percentage/100) + 1/3 (Gross Enrollment Percentage/100)

HDI = 1/3 (Income Index) + 1/3 (Life Expectancy) + 1/3 (Education Index)

My parents asked where I want to live because of the predictions of the stock market crachingand I said Japan. My dad said that China was better so I might move to Japan or China. Fingers crossed that it's Japan.

Why? The Japanese Economy hasn't been well since the Bubble of the 1990s, sinking deeper with the 2008 financial crisis.

To be honest with you, as far as I've heard, Japan is actually a pretty crappy place to live if you're low/middle class worker. At least when compared to western countries. It's crowded, the houses are small, and the rent is high.
China is even worse. It's even more crowded and there are so many restrictions on what you can and can't do/say.

Move to Europe instead.

Honestly. There are too many factors to consider. Best food, best looking people, best economy....
but here's one that is important:

the best country is where home is.

unless you hate home

ehh for every teenager saying Japan... could you really survive the education system?

I'd say Canada or the Netherlands for now, since their education systems aren't that bad...

For the future, Hong Kong, Japan or Brunei for me~
