In actuality it would be hard for a foreigner to live in Japan. You probably won't get voting right, locals think that most foreigners are violent and if you're going there for the guy/girls; sorry cause they normally prefer their own Japanese.
When I went with my boyfriend in Japan some were very kind, but some gave me very dirty look cause I was with a Japanese man.
So be careful with the racism.
I'm dealing with it since I'll spend a month there with my boyfriend in August and I'm studying abroad there for two years in Nagasaki.
But if you wanna go there cause you're an otaku I suggest you go live near akihabara in Tokyo. I went there and that would be anime heaven I guess.

And also Singapore is one of the cleanest countries so that would be a suggestion

are you Caucasian or white? i ask because everybody i come across complaining about racism in Japan and say Japan is racist are ALWAYS white/Caucasian. why is that whites are only the ones that complain about racism in Japan? voting rights are granted to foreigners if they take up Japan citizenship and FYI Japanese people have no problem with dating and marrying foreigners nor they negatively stereotype non-Japanese people

actually, asians are kinda racist and has a lot of stereotypes. Those who will say "no" are liars. Usually, when a white/black foreigner comes in asia, we usually ( i have to admit it) assume that they are here for the pu$$ies especially when they walk around with a local partner. (people usually assume that girls hanging out with foreigner dudes are prostitutes or gold diggers)

we don't initially get racist looks from Japanese because we almost look the same.

I'm actually Mexican and xenophobia is major in Japan if you actually went. The men are the ones that aren't actually that open to dating foreigners and you only get voting rights if you completely change your name to a Japanese one. Even i you're born in Japan but aren't their ethnicity you have to have a foreigner's card wherever you go.
And trust me they stereotype a lot. I was born and raised in Las Vegas, but they still think I jumped the border to the United States even if I keep telling them I didn't.
That's mostly with the conservative elders; my boyfriend's elder family didn't approve of me much since I'm not a Japanese person, but his friends and younger family were a bit more welcoming
