Gov't to hold weekly meetings with economists

Wednesday 30th September, 04:24 PM JST

Naoto Kan, minister for economic and fiscal policy, and other senior members of the Cabinet will hold regular meetings with private-sector economists to get a better grasp of economic and market conditions, a ruling party lawmaker said Wednesday. In principle, the meetings will be organized once a week, starting Friday, said Motohisa Furukawa, senior vice minister for economic and fiscal policy.

The decision on the meetings comes as there is increasing confusion over the Democratic Party of Japan-led government’s financial policies, ranging from Tokyo’s stance on currency market intervention to a proposal calling for a moratorium on loan repayments for cash-strapped small firms. Through the meetings with economists from commercial banks, securities houses and think tanks, Kan is apparently wanting to get firsthand information on the economic outlook and trading in government bonds, which are both important elements to be studied before deciding on the size of the fiscal 2010 budget.

We'll see if these meetings really are effective in the future then.
