Got 16 invites, so if you're interested, PM me a good reason to invite you.

Google Wave, which combines e-mail, instant messaging and wiki-style editing will go on public trial today.

The search giant hopes the tool, described as "how e-mail would look if it were invented today", will transform how people communicate online.

It will be open to 100,000 invitees from 1600BST, each of whom can nominate five further people to "join the Wave".

Google (The) Wave, seems like quite the project. Hope to be able to test it out, feel free to send me an invite if you got one!

This means people can see a comment being written character by character and can formulate their answer to a question before a fellow 'Waver' has even finished asking it.

Sounds nice, better than MSNs "X person is writing something." Will certainly allow conversation to flow more smoothly. If one doesn't like that, it will probably be able to turn off that aspect.

Unlike traditional instant messenger (IM) conversations continue even once everyone has logged out. This means that those invited to a Wave conversation but not currently online, can read the message strand in full at a later date.

That sounds quite cool, like an more advanced guest book, if we're going to put it in terms most users are familiar with. It seemed a bit vague on how sharing images will work, (Whether or not, you can have the images embedded in the conversations for example).

Funny enough, the only browser that can't run Google Wave without a plugin, is Internet Explorer. Because Microsoft means Google Wave is a security compromise or something like that. For me, that's just another reason to not choose IE.

One thing though. The naming of this .. Project, if you will, seems a bit dubious to me.

I don't know how many of you, who come to this forum, is aware of it. But, there is a film named "The Wave". It is a film about a teacher who is trying to teach a class about Nazism (The name "Nazi" stands for: "Nationalsozialismus", in other words: National Socialism. Socialism for the nation.), the class refuses to understand how Hitler was allowed to do as he did. So the teacher proposes an experiment. He calls it "The Wave".

To make a long story short, his experiment is a success. The students (whole school ended up being involved) is taught a valuable lesson.

Now, consider the name of Google's new project. "The Wave", makes you wonder, eh?

For those interested in the film, here's google video:

So, who else is interested in The Wave, despite it's dubious naming? ^^

Well, if you'd read it you'd know that it's invite-only.

100,000 people will be invited by "Google" itself. For every one of those 100,000, there is 5 invites extra.

So in reality we're talking around 500,000 people being on the Wave.

Don't know if those who are invited by invitees, will get invites themselves.

Wow, I never thought I would ever see that book referenced ever again. I see what you mean by when you mentioned it.

It'd be nice if I could get an invite though. Sounds interesting.

This is interesting in concept, I am going to watch the demo vid now.... 1.5 hours ..... The paranoid lunatic in me is screaming but at the same time this seems almost more like an IM device than e mail. It is definitely a new concept though. I may post more later after I get a better idea of the gist of it all.

Edit:

Well summing up what I think hmmm.... If this plays out like it could and I suspect will and the federation aspect of the app works 100% as advertised IM's, Email, even social networks could potentially all be made obsolete almost over night. Some features do bother me like every "wave" being open source and editable by anyone who is a member of it and I can see how open that is to easy abuse even with the playback feature. Long story short I think this is pretty darn cool and it will bring some serious change to the internet it will be an app that almost everyone is going to end up using.

Aye, quite so Karkarov. I think it's long overdue someone started a project like this. I mean, the email is over 20 years old now. About time someone started thinking in new lines, on how to make a better tool.

Though, I think The Wave will be used most by the business world. The whole thing with being able to edit, chat and and all that would fit lots of projects smoothly. Especially when not every member of that project can be online at the same time.

From a business standpoint it is a no brainer this is a must have application.
