Tick. Tock. Time's Up.
Short Story by Ember.
Read at own risk ;D

Tick.

The four of them sat at the booth in the little restaurant.
“Come on! It’ll be great!” That was Andrew; the leader of the group if ever there was one.
Amanda looked eager; she was more daring than the others. “It sounds like fun!”
Jennifer frowned slightly and sipped at her soda. “I don’t know….” She didn’t want to admit she was scared of the idea…
Jason shrugged. “If you guys go I will.” He was Jennifer’s boyfriend; if she didn’t go he wouldn’t, but if she did, he’d stay with her.
Andrew slapped his hands on the table and grinned. “Let’s go then!”
Amanda stood up and pulled Jennifer out of her seat. “Yeah, let’s go!”
They made their way out of the little restaurant, decorated with paper pumpkins and cotton spider webs. Amanda grabbed a little hand full of candy corn from the bowl by the door.
As they made their way to the cemetery for their adventure, they passed houses all in the spirit of Halloween. Candle lit Jack-o’-lanterns sat on front steps and paper bag lanterns lined front paths. A chill wind blew through the air.
It was All Hollow’s Eve.
Most of the kids were already done with their trick-or-treating. It was late.
The little group consisted of some of the last people still out.
Soon they stood at the gate of the deserted Grave Yard, and peered in.
The gate creaked.
The wind howled a little as it wound through the trees that lined the cemetery.
Jennifer clung to Jason’s arm, wanting to stay close.
And Andrew slowly pushed the gate open. “Let’s go.”
It was All Hollow’s Eve.

Tock.

Jennifer looked up. She could have sworn she just heard the tick of a clock.
The sky had been cloudy before… it had even looked like rain.
It was worse now that the clouds were gone. The full moon cast eerie shadows over the graves and the little group of friends. The slightest movements turned into spooky wraiths in the night.
Jennifer didn’t like this at all. “G-guys… let’s go back home. It’s cold.”
Amanda grinned and sat on one of the larger graves. “Nah, it’s nice out! Besides, you’ve got a coat,” she pointed out with a cheerful smile. She loved spooky stuff like this; she didn’t scare easily.
She looked down at her feet. “Oh, looks like someone’s been here recently…” There was a bouquet of flowers at the base of the grave she sat on. She slipped off nimbly and inspected the words carved into the stone, almost worn completely away.
“Alice Rodney… Born January 1st, 1899… Died October 31st, 1909.” She frowned. “You know, that’s really sad… she was only ten!”
Jennifer backed away from the grave. “Today is the day she died….” That had to be some sort of bad luck. And she had to wonder who was putting flowers on the grave of a girl who had died 100 years ago…
Andrew laughed a little. “Are you afraid, Jen?”
Jennifer frowned slightly, and Jason hugged her around the side. “Guys, lay off her. You know she doesn’t like creepy stuff like this.”
Amanda nodded, a bit ashamed. “Sorrryyy,” she said, and then ran off in a random direction. “Come this way guys!”
Jennifer frowned and ran after Amanda, holding Jason’s hand. “Wait! Don’t just run off like that!”
Amanda just laughed and disappeared behind a large gravestone.

Tick.

“There it is again!” Jennifer looked around.
Jason glanced at her. “What?”
“You didn’t just hear that tick?”
“Tick… as in a clock?” Jason was still looking confused.
“Come on Jason… don’t pretend you didn’t hear it!” She held his hand tighter, frightened.
They got to the grave Amanda was hiding behind, and Andrew held up his finger to silence the couple, starting to sneak around the grave.
Jennifer hugged Jason’s arm, backing away. If Amanda screamed, she would scream ten times louder…
Andrew jumped behind the grave, growling, but stood up straight again as soon as he saw what was behind the grave.
Nothing. Nothing but a single flower.
Andrew bent down to pick up the flower, and looked around. “Amanda…? Are you over there?”
Jennifer was about ready to panic. “W-where’d she go…?”
Andrew looked around again, then shrugged. “Dunno…”
Jennifer knew Amanda too well. She wouldn’t have just gone and left them. She was either trying to scare them –and succeeding- or something… else… had happened.
“Should we look for her…?” Jason asked, looking around.
Andrew nodded. “Yeah. We can’t leave without her.” He climbed on top of the large tombstone, with a boost from Jason.
“D-do you see her?” Jennifer asked, looking up. The stone was at least as tall as Jason; Andrew would have a good view of the whole place from up there.
Andrew looked around, and pointed west. “I see her!”
She was walking around all the way near the edge of the forest to the west of the graveyard. Andrew jumped down and started running.

Tock.

Jennifer jumped this time. She was sure she heard the ticking and tocking of a clock!
“Jen? You okay?” Jason squeezed her hand.
“Y-yeah…” She shook her head and they followed Andrew through the empty cemetery in the night.
They reached Amanda, and called to her. “Amanda!” Andrew ran up to her and took her arm. “Don’t run off like that.”
She didn’t respond to him.
“A-amanda…?” Jennifer reached out and poked Amanda, and pulled her hand back suddenly; Amanda’s skin was freezing! She was doing really well at not responding to them.
Almost too well….
And then she turned around.
Her eyes were completely blank! She was just… staring ahead of her.
“Amanda?” Andrew waved his hand in front of her face, but she didn’t move.
Jason frowned. “Andrew… is she okay?”
Andrew shook his head. “I don’t think so…”
And then Amanda started to walk off into the woods, through a little gap in the fence.
Andrew took a few steps after her. “Wait! Amanda!” He turned to Jason and Jennifer. “Let’s go.”
Jason nodded and led Jennifer into the woods.

Tick.

Jennifer looked up. She could have sworn that the ticking and tocking was getting faster…
And no one else seemed to be hearing it still.
She looked to her left and right as Jason led her through the forest. The wind decided to howl again, making branches scrape against each other…
She looked up again. “… Jason…? Where did Andrew and Amanda go?” There was a single flower at their feet now.
Jason shook his head, unsure of the answer himself.
But he squeezed Jennifer’s hand again. “It’s okay. They’re probably just trying to spook you out.” He had a reassuring smile.
“Well it’s working…!” Jennifer hugged his arm closer.
The wind picked up a bit and Jennifer started shivering.
“I-it suddenly got a lot colder…” She mumbled.
The icy moon was still casting eerie shadows over everything. Everywhere Jennifer looked, there was some shape ready to jump out at her.
But still Jason led her further on, looking for Amanda and Andrew.

Tock.

There it was again!
It was definitely getting faster….
“Jason…”
“Yeah? You okay, Jen?” He led her to a bench on the path in the woods, and they sat down.
She shook her head. “No… I want to go home, Jason! Take me home!” She shivered in the cold.
Jason took off his jacket and slipped it over Jennifer’s already covered shoulders, kissing her gently on the lips. “It’s okay, Jen. I won’t let anything happen to you.” He hugged her close and ran his hand through her hair.
Jennifer hugged him close and shut her eyes tight. She could have sworn she’d just seen a little girl through the trees, for a fraction of a second.

Tick.

Suddenly Jason went stiff. His skin became cold.
“Jason…?”
She opened her eyes, and screamed, scrambling to stand up.
Where Jason had just been, something that looked a little like Jason sat. There was a single flower on his lap.
Like Jason, but…. Dead looking.
His eyes were blank, just like Amanda’s had been.
Jennifer stumbled backwards, her hands to her beating heart.
“W-w-what? Jason…?”
She took one step closer, and then screamed again, turned and ran.

Tock.

She had seen it… his eyes… one had fallen out! And a snake had slithered out of the socket! The other eye…
Well, she’d been too afraid to look.
His lips had moved to form a grotesque, soundless shriek.
Jennifer ran blindly through the woods, looking to her left and to her right, seeing flickering images of that little girl everywhere she went. Flickering like an old movie... black and white except for her blond hair and the blood that stained her clothes.
And then she collided with something hard and cold.

Tick.

The clock she alone could hear was getting faster still.
She looked up at what she’d bumped into, and couldn’t even scream this time for the fear.
Andrew looked even worse than Jason had.
He was so pale.
And he lunged at her, the same soundless shrieking face on as Jason had had.

Tock.

She turned and ran, but Amanda was up ahead. She had the same expression as Jason and Andrew had.
As Andrew closed in on her back and Amanda on her front, Jennifer found an escape at her left; Jason was to her right.

Tick.

Jennifer ran, and they chased slowly, stumbling and silently moaning with the wind.
The trees creaked, and the shadows jumped out at her.
She tripped.

Tock.

One of her followers grabbed her ankle with icy hands, and she screamed again, kicking out at whoever it was.

Tick.

She stood up and would have run more but that little girl was in front of her.

Tock.

She wore a clock around her neck. It was speeding up again.

Tick.

“Time’s almost up, Jennifer.” She said, staring at her.

Tock.

Jennifer tried to back up.

Tick.

Her friends blocked her way.

Tock.

Where do I run?

Tick.

Nowhere to Run!

Tock.

Tick.

Tock.

Ti- To-
Ti- To-
T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-ttttt.

And the clock around the girl’s neck stopped.
Jennifer looked around, more frightened than she’d ever been in her life.
The little girl flickered just as Jennifer was turning to run. She reappeared in front of her again.
“You can’t run from me.” Then there were four of the girl; one on each side of Jennifer.
Each of the little girl copies held a single flower.
Each of Jennifer’s friends had disappeared.
Jennifer was alone.
She was terrified.
And she realized it.
She was dead.
She had been since the clock stopped ticking.

@ Koko-chan :: THANKS :3
But yeah, she died D: Couldn't be a scary story without the main character dying =w=
And now that I think about it...
Didn't I use 'Jason' for the OTHER horror story I wrote? XD
Silly me, can't think of other names >__<
AND YES I was happy with the picture ^^
I actually found another picture of a little girl and used her body and dress as a base =w=
But I changed her arms and a little of the dress, added long undies and changed her face XD

@ Rei-chan : Aww, sorry ^^'
It WAS supposed to be scary though =w=
So I guess I succeeded?
I live kinda close to a graveyard. I used to play there =w=
So I'm not really afraid of them...
Probably would be if it was night though.
