Considering that Anime and Manga are gaining popularity in the world, do you think It should be rated?

Personaly, I just think they should contain a warning instead. And nol I'm not talking about hentai animes (doujin mangas).

One thing animes usual don't start as a anime when first released >_> They have to publish mangas first and wait a couple of months or years to make a anime

Manga is still the same as Anime >_> Plus this sounds like a vs thread...

Yes it should be rated otherwise there would be no more anime or mangas. In other words if you don't rate it how do people if its good or not to watch/read and when it comes to that the people in japan will stop making mangas and anime cuz they don't know if it's good or not. (well to me only) next the whole world will die from boredness and go crazy

Im not sure if it could be rated like videogames could. With videogames you have a structure for a genre and then a game is rated on how well it meets or exceeds that structure. So you wouldn't rate a RPG on how well it is as an FPS. While there is still the factor of overall quality with manga and anime, tastes seem to more specific and a majority of people will watch an Anime/read a manga based on popularity not actual quality. For example (naruto) is watched more for its popularity than quality so i don't think ratings would do much to benefit the industy. Not to say they would be bad or anything.

^^ think you got a bit off-topic there, Anime & Manga are already rated because of the different demographics. Some manga also have age-ranges printed on the back. Not to mention there is also Hentai which is CLASSIFIES as adults only

If a non-profit body, similar to how the ESRB rates video games, would come up with a system of rating anime and manga, then I think that would be good. Because the truth is, the different genres of anime overlap to the extent that it's difficult to differentiate when one type of anime/manga is another. The most obvious example is when ecchi becomes hentai.

The current understanding is that ecchi is not R18, but we all pretty much know that ecchi allows frontal exposure, and in many instances comical representations of the male and female genitalia (e.g. using a banana or blurring the image, etc.).

So I think there should at least be a clarification of lines as to when one genre begins, and where one ends. At the very least, this should make things clear, as far as "ratings" are concerned.

Ok this thread is confusing, is this referring to rating as in terms of quality or raing as in terms of age intended? If the former then my above argument was valid cause the person quoting me was reffering to the latter? Seriously what type of "rating" is this thread referring to?

Well, I admit, this thread is a bit ambiguous. So let me explain:

(1) By rating, I meant, not as whether it is good or bad, that should be covered under review or critique. In this case, I would go for the general target audiences. But if you have another point of view on how the rating should focus on, fell free to comment also.

(2) You may post whatever comment you have on this topic. If you agree/disagree that it should be rated, you may add your reason, what kind classification should there be, who should govern them, etc (whatever). This can also be vs thread.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for my personal opinion, though I agree with cleaverboy, rating an anime/manga is a difficult task, I also cannot dispose the benefit of having a rating imprinted on the cover/back of manga/anime pack. Thats why I would have a warning imprinted instead, saying: "contains sexual/gory/bloody references/images". . But I do lament how some parent don't care, or worse don't know about it (but thats another subject).

For bnogo and anyone else who shares more less the same view as him:
the purpose of having rating is not really to restrict anyone from consuming the product (or whatever), though it may produce similar effect. It is for the consumer benefit only (in this case the parrents). You can argue about this also.

I have visited some major bookstores in Singapore that sells animes/mangas and I found out that some do have ratings on them and some don't. For eaxmple. mangas published by kodansha have age range and category (Mature for example) imprinted on the cover while mangas published by Viz Media don't. Well, to tell you the truth, back then in my teens (and in my home country, Indonesia) they didn't have it. How about in your respective countries?

Thanks for the reply guys/gals.

I believe that they should be rate--and they are. You wouldn't want a kid to watch something like Hentai, horror, or just adult rated themes or something, especially when they don't know it, right?
