Chapter Eighteen :/: A Walk in the Garden

After lunch that day, all four of the youth were charged with going outside to get fresh air. “Fresh Autumn air is the best for a budding romance,” Mrs. Smith had told them.

They all four of them walked through the neatly trimmed garden in the front of the house. Kat swung her arms, bored and anxious for the game. Too bad she wouldn’t be able to watch it.

Soon, Kat decided she didn’t want to stay in one place. “I’ll be off somewhere,” she said as she peeled off from the group.

About three minutes later, Maria had to use the restroom, so she excused herself from the group with a smile at Alex.

And Dillon and Alex were left walking in silence. It was a bit awkward. “So, you watch sports, Dillon?” Alex asked.

Dillon shook his head. “No, not much. A bit of golf here and there. I don’t really see the point in watching sports.”

“Ah. I see.”
Alex frowned slightly. “Well, if it’s all the same to you, I’m going to go walk that way,” he pointed left, and started down that path.

Dillon shrugged and kept walking on.

As Alex made his way down a winding path through the tall bushes, he was thinking about what his life had in store for him. The more time he spent here the more he didn’t feel like this was right at all. He liked Maria fine enough but he couldn’t see himself loving her, let alone settling down any time soon with her.

And then he bumped into Kat, sending her sprawling.

She held herself up on her elbows and only slightly glared up at him. “You’re sure lucky you’re not Dillon, Alex.”

Alex chuckled and offered her a hand up. She was thinking about not accepting his help, but decided he was a friend now, and soon she was standing up again.

“Where’s Maria?” Kat looked around, behind Alex and behind herself.

“Oh, she had to go to the rest room… then I left Dillon.”

Kat laughed and nodded. “I woulda done it too.“

Alex nodded and looked around. “These bushes are tall…” He mumbled, not liking that they couldn’t see over them. But it also felt like one of those adventure games he’d played as a kid. They were hidden away, cut off from the rest of the world in the midst of the jungle.

Kat was likely thinking the same thing; she had a grin on her face, and Alex could just see the whip in her hands and fedora hat on her head.

Kat tilted her head. “What?” She’d noticed him looking at her for so long.

Alex was pulled back to reality and shook his head. “Oh, nothing. Just thinking that you would make a great Indiana Jones.”

She laughed, and shrugged. “I’ll take that as a compliment, then!”

Alex nodded and grinned, then pointed down the path. “We should go find the others, right?” To be honest, he didn’t mind this; being hidden in these bushes with Kat. But no! He wasn’t supposed to think that way, was he…?

Kat nodded and started off in that direction, looking over her shoulder at Alex. “I’m guessing you’re the type that likes sports,” she said.

Alex nodded. “Yup. Baseball and Football mostly. Hockey and Basketball next. Don’t care for Soccer much, and Golf’s just… so boring. Tennis has it’s good spots. What about you, Kat?”

She turned so she was walking backwards and grinned. “Yep. Don’t care much for Hockey or Basketball or Soccer, but Baseball and Football are right up my alley!” Then she frowned, and crossed her arms, still put out about not being able to watch the game tonight.

“Something wrong?”

“Yeah. The Packers are playing the Eagles tonight! But there aren’t any TVs in this stupid nut house.”

Alex’s confused look made Kat stop and look at him suspiciously. “What do you mean, no TVs? Isn’t there one in your room?”

Kat stopped dead. “What?! No! Don’t tell me you have one?!“

He nodded, his eyes going slightly sparkly for a second. “Fifty-inch, plasma, HD… it’s pretty amazing, really!”

Kat’s eyes widened. “Does Dillon get that too?”

Alex nodded. As far as he knew, the rooms were identical.

Kat crossed her arms stubbornly. “Well, that’s sexism if ever there was sexism.”

All Alex could do was laugh and try not to rub it in too much as they tried to find the others.

Chapter Nineteen :/: A Smile Without Heart

When Maria closed the door to the restroom, and went back outside, she was expecting it to be difficult to find Alex again. Surely he would have continued walking while she was gone. He could have gone anywhere.

It was a few minutes later that she felt someone gently lifting her hair from behind, and spun around to find Dillon smiling down at her, his face fairly close to hers.

“Welcome back, my beauty,” he whispered in her ear. She flinched backwards, and was going to walk away without a word, but Dillon took hold of her wrist; not gently, but not too forcefully either…

“Where’s Alex…?” She asked, looking away from Dillon.

Dillon shrugged and pulled Maria closer to him. “Does it matter when you have me?”

She looked troubled, and tried to get free. But he had too firm of a grip on her, and pulled her onto a winding path of tall bushes, where no one would be able to see them.

“Please let me go, Dillon…” Maria stopped struggling because it was no use. She wasn’t strong enough to pull free of him.

He shook his head slowly, with a little smile on his face. “I won’t let you go, Maria…” He leaned closer to her and kissed her cheek.

“No, let me go!” Maria got as close as she ever would to shouting, and pushed out with all her might, breaking away from Dillon’s embrace.

Dillon frowned. “Maria… why don’t you just give in?” He asked, sounding slightly pained.

She looked away. “Because I have to marry someone else… If I give in…” She shook her head and didn’t continue the sentence out loud. I wouldn’t be able to let go.

They both looked up. Voices were approaching. Kat and Alex.

Dillon pulled Maria close one last time. “Alex doesn’t need you…” He whispered, and then left her before the others found them together.

Maria looked after his back as he left. “Does that mean you do…?” She whispered to herself.

The next moment, Alex and Kat appeared around the corner, laughing about something. “Oh, Maria! There you are!” Kat waved.

Alex smiled, but Maria could see that his heart wasn’t really in it. It never had been…

Chapter Nineteen :/: Someone Else?

Dillon walked through the garden, a bit put out with himself. What had gotten into him, saying what he’d said, acting the way he’d acted?

Why did he care if Maria pushed him away? Why did he feel upset when her gentle voice had gotten so loud…?

This wasn’t like him.

He would need to get back to normal soon…

He decided to wander alone until the others found him. It took them twenty minutes at least, and by that time they were all ready to go inside again.

He rejoined them, noting how Maria walked with Alex. He smiled his fake pleasant smile, and fell into stride with Kat.

“Did you enjoy your walk, Kat?”

She frowned ahead of her and said, “Yup. It was a lot better than it would have been with you there.”

Dillon shook his head. “My dear Kat, you say such hurtful things…”

Kat nodded. “Yup. Proud of it.”

Dillon kept the pleasant smile, inwardly glad that Kat hated him so much. He wouldn’t have to worry about breaking her heart now would he?

He wiggled his still sore toes though, and did wish she was a little less violent about it.

As they made their way beck into the building, Dillon pondered his own heart. Though he sometimes didn’t like to admit he had such feelings, he had two or three soft spots. Apparently Maria was becoming one of them.

He didn’t want to hurt her… He’d been telling himself that how she felt didn’t matter, but that just wasn’t true. If she was hurt, he would hurt as well.

He put his forehead in his hand momentarily.

“What, you getting a headache?” Kat looked hopeful.

Dillon shook his head. “Ah, no. Just thinking.”

Kat smirked. “Well, glad to see you look so pained, either way.” She looked almost triumphant.

What am I thinking? Dillon had never thought like this, so why did he all of a sudden care about someone other than himself?

Chapter Twenty :/: A Powerful Enemy

As the four sat down to dinner that day, Kat had a plan hatching in her head.

She just needed a chance to make it reality.

She got the chance when Dillon excused himself to use the restroom.

She looked around, mostly just concerned with making sure Mrs. Smith wasn’t looking. She slipped something out of her pocket and grinned. When no one was looking, she put a few drops of it in Dillon’s soup.

I knew it was a good idea to bring my special hot sauce!

In truth, one person noticed; Alex had glanced up at her just as she’d slipped the green sauce into Dillon’s food, and he grinned. This would be good.

Dillon came back, sat down, and continued eating as usual.

Kat watched with glee as his face started to slowly turn cherry-red, and she could imagine steam coming out of his ears. His grip on his spoon was so tight that his knuckles were white, and he finally let go and reached for his glass of water.

Of course, like any GOOD hot sauce, water didn’t help, and finally Kat let out her pent in laughter and slapped the table, holding her side with her other arm. It had gone all too well!

Dillon realized it was probably a bad thing that Kat hated him. She was a powerful enemy, and that was not what Dillon needed right now.

Chapter Twenty-One :/: Big Screen TV

Alex was sitting on his couch, staring at the TV screen in front of him, a big, stupid grin on his face. With almost ceremonious carefulness, he raised the remote and turned it on, then flipped through the channels until he found a random sports game to watch.

Kat’s mentioning of a game tonight fleeted through his thoughts for a second or two, and then there was a thud from near the bed.

Alex scrambled up and rushed out into the main room, only to find Kat sitting on the floor and rubbing her thigh, as if his thoughts had called her forth. “Stupid shoes.” She glared up at Alex. “Hasn’t anyone ever told you not to leave your shoes lying in the middle of the room?”

Alex just stared at her dumbly, and offered her a hand up, which she thought about refusing and then, as graciously as she could, took.

Once she was on her feet, she made her way to the TV room, and stood in the doorway, hands on her hips and feet in a wide stance. “Not bad.” She entered the room with Alex following, still a little stunned, and plopped herself down on the couch. She took up the remote, took a fleeting glance at it, and hit the guide button, then scrolled through the channels.

After a minute of searching, she grinned wide and pressed Select, then put her feet up on the coffee table and her hands behind her head. Her eyes darted from the TV to Alex, who still stood in the doorway.

“What? The game’s starting in two minutes!” She gestured to the TV. “I can’t let a place like this stop me!” There were soft thumps as she patted the spot next to her on the couch. “Games are more fun to watch when there’s a friend to cheer with you, come on!”

Alex shook his head and shrugged, and plopped himself down as well. “Somehow, I knew this was going to happen…” He mumbled, almost rolling his eyes at himself.

After a few seconds, Kat looked around. “Got any junk food?” She had some in her room that she’d gotten into the building, but she’d forgotten to bring it.

Alex shook his head. “No, it was against the rules to bring food with us…” he mumbled, wanting to laugh. Kat was becoming easier to predict.

Kat put her pointer finger to her lips and sshh’d Alex. “It’s starting, sshh!” She pulled her legs up to sit cross-legged on the couch.

The game went well. Green Bay won the toss, and scored within two minutes of starting.

“Yes!!” Kat whooped, but Alex sshh’d her.

“Hey, if anyone finds out you’re here we’ll both be in a lot of trouble…!” He looked around nervously.

Kat shrugged. “So? I want to get in trouble so they’ll kick me out!” Alex’s pleading look made her scowl but say, “Fine, fine. Don’t look so pathetic, sheesh.”

Soon, Green Bay was three touchdowns ahead and the QB of the Eagles had just thrown a pick.

“Heheh! Picked like a booger!” Kat said, doing a fist pump.

Alex looked over at her, incredulous. He started laughing.

“Picked… like a booger…!?”
He managed to get out between fits of laughter.

Kat shrugged. “What?!” She repeated, indignant. “Say it all the time,” she mumbled and crossed her arms over her chest.

Alex just laughed it off and patted her on the head, impressed with her embarrassed side. He hadn’t known it existed. She seemed a little more like a girl this way. Maybe that was a bad thing.

The rest of the game went just as well as the first half. Green Bay was up 31 to 6, and there were two minutes left on the clock. Kat was sitting on the edge of the couch, grinning and clapping cheerfully. “We’ve got this game in the bag. It’s a four-score game, they can’t make four scores in two minutes.” She had been good about staying fairly quiet so far, but Alex could tell she was going to get loud pretty soon here. They’d long since pushed the coffee table away because Kat kept leaping up and bumping into it.

Green Bay made another touchdown, and the clock ran down.

For some reason, Kat had to wait until the clock said zero to cheer. In her book, nothing was over until the clock read zero. “Yes! Told ya didn’t I?” She was being pretty loud… and it was late. Alex waved his arms and sshh’d, but she either didn’t notice or didn’t care. “Rogers and Gennings and Driver! Best team ever, the Packe-”

The only way Alex could thing to quiet her had been to plant a kiss on her mouth; maybe it had been more hormones than reason that made him do it. He had his eyes shut tight, looked a little scared almost. Kat’s eyes were wide open and she looked really confused.

They were both very still, still lip-locked but unmoving.

Kat was the first to regain her senses; Alex didn’t know if it was safe yet to let her talk.

“What was that about?!”

“Y-you were being really loud…” Alex rubbed the back of his head.

“Interesting way of shutting someone up…” Kat mumbled. She shook her head, and then shrugged. “Anyways, let’s just… pretend it never happened, yeah?”

Alex was silent for a little bit, and then shook his head.

“What?” Kat looked over at him.

“I don’t want to forget it happened.” He mumbled, and then looked back up at Kat. He was sure he wasn’t supposed to feel this way about Kat, but he didn’t know what he could do about it. He leaned in again.

Kat was going to push him away, but after thinking about it a little, realized this would be her first real kiss. Maybe it would be nice? She would give it, and Alex, a shot and see what happened.

Their lips touched again, and Alex reached for Kat’s short red hair, stroking it gently.

For Kat, it was like sparks were flying, and suddenly she wanted more. She couldn’t explain this feeling, this need to know every little bit of Alex. Somewhere in the recesses of her mind, she wondered sardonically if this was how Dillon was used to making girls feel.

Before she knew it, she was on top of Alex and trying to take off his shirt. Whoa, slow down, Kat! She warned herself, but it took rolling off the couch to snap her out of it.

She sat on the ground, next to Alex, and they both seemed a little awkward now that they’d snapped out of it. The cheering of the crowd on the TV as all that could be heard until Kat broke the silence. “Errr… let’s keep this a secret.” Mumbled Kat, to the rapid nodding agreement of Alex.

It had been quick, but she’d felt it in that little time they were kissing. Not only their bodies, but their minds had called out to each other. Kat shook her head inwardly. What are you thinking? Trying to say he’s your soul mate or whatever? It was nothing more than hormones!

Kat stood up and left Alex’s room quickly, with a quick, “Thanks for letting me use your TV.”

When Alex heard the soft click of his door closing, he let himself fall back down to the ground with a heavy sigh. Looks like I’ve gotten in trouble anyways.

Chapter Twenty-Two :/: Girl Talk

The next morning, Kat awoke to the sound of gentle knocking on her door. She rubbed her eyes irritably and trudged to the door, opening it a crack. She yawned, and saw that Maria was standing outside her door, then opened it more. “Hhhnnm?” she mumbled, still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.

Maria looked a little bit uncomfortable, and said, “Mm… Kat, can I talk to you about something…?”

Kat nodded slowly, and opened the door all the way for Maria to come in. Something seemed urgent about Maria’s manner. “What’s wrong?”

Maria and Kat went to the room with the couch and both sat down before Maria said anything.

“Umm… I don’t know how to say this…” Maria started, twiddling her fingers.

Kat tilted her head, being patient for once in her life. There was something about Maria that made it impossible for anyone to hurt her. Kat even smiled encouragingly. “Just go ahead and say it,” she prompted.

After a slight pause, Maria blurted, “I think I love Dillon…!”

Kat just stared at her. “W-what?! Dillon? The perverted Dillon?” She couldn’t help the incredulous tone of voice.

Maria looked away. She’d known it was a bad idea to tell someone. “W-wait…! Let me explain first…”

Kat nodded slowly, opening the floor to Maria.

Maria told Kat the whole story, from the first kiss in the dark, to all the secret meetings thereafter.

When she was done, Kat was stunned. “So you weren’t lost that time!” She blinked, and then frowned. “But really, Maria! That guy, he’s no good. All he wants is to use you.” She was worried for the innocent Maria.

The timid girl looked down and twiddled her fingers again. “B…but… He hasn’t hurt me yet… he hasn’t done anything I told him not to do…” She was desperate for Kat’s approval and acceptance. She knew full well that Kat didn’t like Dillon, which was part of the reason she’d told her. If she’d really liked Dillon, Maria would never have told, not wanting to steal Dillon away.

“I don’t know… the guy’s a freak.” Kat said flatly.

Maria looked distressed. “Please, Kat…! I wanted to tell you because I look up to you… I want you to support me and help me…” She looked down, and Kat felt guilty.

“Alright…” Kat groaned. “But if he does anything bad, you just say the word and I’ll slip a lizard in his soup next time!” She crossed her arms, and Maria looked a little shocked and worried, but when she caught sight of Kat’s smile, she smiled also and hugged Kat.

But then she remembered the other thing that had been on her mind about this issue, and looked down again. “But I need to tell Alex…” She frowned, not looking forward to it.

Kat was suddenly reminded of the previous night, and nearly blushed. No! Katharine Marie O'Brian does NOT blush! “Hmm, yeah, about Alex…” She started.

Maria kept talking before Kat could say more. “I know he doesn’t love me, so it should be easy, right? When he smiles at me, it’s just a smile… it doesn’t reach his eyes… But when he’s with you-!” She broke off, suddenly embarrassed. “I’ve seen the way he smiles when he’s with you, Kat! I think his heart is with you anyways, so it’s okay for me to love someone else, right…?”

Maria looked so worried. She really was the purest of all of them. If Dillon ruins that in her, I’ll kill him. Kat offered a smile to Maria. “Actually, he kissed me last night…” She shrugged a little. “I went to watch the football game in his room and one thing led to another… I didn’t snap out of it until we rolled off the couch…” She rubbed the back of her head, embarrassed again. That was two times in two days she’d shown that side of herself. This place was messing with her brain.

Maria looked shocked. “R-really?!” She shook her head. “I-I didn’t know-! So I don’t have to worry about being unfaithful, then…?” She looked so relieved and Kat smiled and nodded.

A puzzled look crossed Maria’s face though. “Um, but, why were you rolling off the couch? I don’t quite understand…” Had Kat been resisting and trying to pull away or something?

Kat stared at her and wondered if Maria’s parents had told her that babies came from the stork. She shook her head slightly, not wanting to taint her innocent mind… but she needed to know, if she was in love with someone like Dillon. “Well, you see, when boys and girls kiss, sometimes they…” She wanted to choose her words wisely. “Well, they think about doing other things together.”

Maria was silent for a while, and then blushed deep pink. “Oh.” She hid her face. “Kat, you’re such a bad girl-!” She was giggling though. She hadn’t ever had girl talk like this before.
