Would you have been addicted to Walt Disney if anime/manga did not exist?

Just a thought.- ...- As for me, I do not think I would ever be addicted to Walt Disneys' movies the same way as my addiction to anime and manga

Never in a million years. I've never liked Disney movies. Before I even heard of Anime I never watched Disney. It wasn't until I was 8 or 9 that I watched Robotech: Macross Saga then onto Ninja Scroll, Akira My first Two major anime films. After that I was in love. That was 17 years ago.

In my case family move a lot to different country and I didn't get to see many Japanese animation @ all. So, I kind grew up with Mikey Mouse.
So, if anime/manga wouldn't existed. Yes,I would watch Disney Cartoons their movies are actually pretty good I think my fave would be Toy Story!!

I'd stop watching TV all together if that happened, or scrape my eyes out with a spoon.

Yes!!! I like old Disney more than Anime. The new stuff like Toy Story, Bug Life, Monster's Inc., Emperor's New Groove and Lilo & Stitch etc, heeeellll NOooo! The oldies like Oliver & Company, The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Mulan, Atlantis etc... I hate most of the new stuff but sporadically they have good ones. My fave are the hand drawn ones.

In reality many people here talk like anime is better than American animation but Anime is a derivative of Disney and American animation. Just like cars, computers etc... the Asians took what we have (Animation) and added their own to try to upstage us, or it could be simply to do it.

It is because Walt Disney that there is even Anime. Research people. And to me no matter how demonic & grotesque the anime the characters (Villians) aren't as alive or evil as Disney's. I was watching some old Disney movies like Sleeping Beauty(Maleficent), The Little Mermaid(Ursela), Oliver and Company(Mr, Sykes), Cinderella(Step Mother), Aladdin(Jafar), Beauty and the Beast(Gaston) to name a few and realize they were (especially Maleficent, Ursela and the Step Mother) EVIL and Brilliant at it.

I'm sorry but most Manga and Anime Characters are two dimensional.

Probably not. I think I'd just be hooked on regular t.v. shows. Not that I'm not now, but if there weren't anime, then I guess I'd love them... More? 8( Idk.

Hey, hey! Let's not discredit Walt Disney of its achievements. Personally, I loved all the cartoons (Little Mermaid is my fav). I do admit that their stuff isn't as "warm" as it used to be. Even for anime, I like "warm" stories (Love Hayao Miyazaki). I guess I am a sentimental viewer. Watching stuff with meaning and life lessons is something worth being appreciated.

O.o I'd take up a living... not watch disney... disney is for people who want their iq sucked dry.

I think he is referring to Disney channel crap. O.o old Disney like Lion King and Aladdin should not be dissed. O.o And if we are talking about Disney movies we should only refer to the studio not the production company.

No. I don't have any dislike of Disney but I like anime because it's sooooooooooooooo different than American animation. However, when I was a kid I loved Tail Spin, Duck Tales, Goof Troop, Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck. Gargoyles and Recess are still great though. I'd rather watch Recess than most comedy anime.

PS, Lion King and Aladdin are not old. Geez. I was in like 7th grade when Lion King came out. Old Disney is Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio and stuff like that.

This coming from a 26 year-old... but yea I remember those shows... ah memories...Well these shows were certianly unique in a way, Although even as a kid I hated reruns, I think thats what killed the joy in watching them for myself... I think I got attached to anime like Voltron becuase it was completly new from all the disney movies I watched that have been a large part of my childhood (like Alice and Wonderland, personal favorite) . And anime had tone of seriousness about it as well (some shows were obviously intended for an older audience), I can't remember the title of this anime movie I watched, but the protagonist's girlfriend or mother, I can't remember which, was killed before his eyes, and for a 4 year-old that was pretty traumatising (my parents didn't know what anime was at the time, just got it at the base library).

lol and it was also "flashy-er" along with 80'/90's sci-fi (or close to it) . And becuase anime was drawn from various studios instead of the Disney's retinue of sources, each studio had to compete to be unique and or successful, and it are these successful ones which reach the west coast (if there are cliche' elements in the show, its becuase it works, which can be taken as a good and bad thing [as Jade1985 pointed out]), well my point is that anime will always bring something new to the table, becuase its up to the creator of the show. For Disney its what sells, it caters to family audiences, and it does so successfully (look at Toy Story, its a great movie), anime kind of does it but for its own particular audience.

That's the thing about american animation for the most part: It's pure kids stuff.

*** Warning: the following is rambling/off-topic ***
It's like the concept is that as the watcher gets older and wants things aimed at people their age, they'll transition to live action programming. In Japan it seems like the concept is that as the watchers get older and more mature, they'll transition to animated content that's older and more mature.

That's also one of the things that hurts comparisons. You can't compare something like Duck Tales to Evangelion or Akira. Of COURSE the anime is going to seem better, especially if you're over the age of 10. Duck Tales kinda makes no qualms about being for young kids but you can tell from the get go that FMA and EVA's target market isn't 10 year olds. A better comparison would be comparing Duck Tales to something like Doremon or Pokemon or some other show that's really aimed at kids in 4th grade and younger.
