Four Temperaments is a theory of psychology that stems from the ancient medical concept of humorism.

Socrates, one of the most renowned of the Greek sages, used and taught as an axiom to his hearers: "Know yourself."

If we consider the reaction of various persons to the same experience, we will find that it is different in every one of them; it may be quick and lasting, or slow but lasting; or it may be quick but of short duration, or slow and of short duration. This manner of reaction, or the different degrees of excitability, is what we call "temperament." There are four temperaments: the choleric, the melancholic, the sanguine, and the phlegmatic.

Which one most suits you? And why?

Gonna save you from some work:

Sanguine:
Self-composed Not given to worry Liberal
Tends to follow rather than lead Cordial Peaceable
Talkative Not averse to change Adjusts easily
Tends to prefer informality Aware of surroundings Impetuous
Impulsive Lacking in perseverance Lacking in initiative
Prone to carelessness, hedonism, flightiness, and lust

Choleric:
Self-composed Not given to worry Persuasive Independent
Rarely shows embarrassment Tends to lead rather than follow
Persistent Insistent Decisive Dynamic Impetuous Impulsive Touchy Prone to hypocrisy, deceit, pride, and anger

Melancholic:
Sensitive Intuitive Self-conscious Easily embarrassed
Easily hurt Introspective Sentimental Moody
Likes to be alone Empathetic Often artistic
Often fussy and perfectionist Deep
Prone to depression, avarice, and gluttony

Phlegmatic:
Peaceful Easy-going Deliberative Faithful Reliable
Relatively unaffected by environment Reserved Distant
Slow in movement Constant in mood Not prone to worry
Prone to stagnation and sloth

For me, Melancholic, and maybe a bit of Phlegmatic.

Definitely Choleric, but I don't find these suffice to be called the four temperaments of human beings. Then again, I can't come up with something much better myself but I'm just saying. Also this suggests that some people just never change, while I don't find that to be true. Because I would consider myself when I was younger more of a phlegmatic but now I'm allot more like a choleric. So how do you explain this change in later stages of life?

Uhhhhh... I'm Melancholic with a bit of Choleric... None of them completely describe me though.
The Jung personality types are the most accurate for me! INFP!
Maybe I shouldn't mention that on this thread? I'm getting off topic. lmao.

(I'm a bit out of it, so just ignore me if I ramble like a crazy old bat.)

Well, first of all, keep in mind that it does go a lot deeper than this. These are just a few personality traits, and if you dig around, you'll find out there's more to it. I just wanted to give a brief overview so it didn't bore anyone. Not to mention, it's connected to MBTI and the Eight Functions and much more.

How would I explain them? Hard to put into words, but I can try. The word temperament means how you think/react/are, more or less. As you grow older, you change. No one stays the same forever. And as you mature, you change the way you act, don't you? As you interact with other humans, they teach you things, they have an impact on you.

Let's say there's a kid. This kid is really shy, doesn't like to step outside their comfort zone, would rather be on their own. Melancholic. As people walk in and out of this kid's like, as they grow up, they're gonna change. Someone might help them out of their shell, someone might push them in deeper. They might be a follower, but realize that they'd rather be a leader. Vice versa. It just depends on what's going on, who's influencing them.

I'm not making much sense anymore, but all I can say is people change. They change because of what happens to them. You can't expect you as a child to be able to face the world as adult you. You need to change to adapt.

Pftt... I have a bit of all 4. It's weird. In categories like these, I can never side to one.
