for a beginner you must start playing guitar using an acoustic one because:

1. you are not plugging it in an amplifier and you can play it and practice it everywhere...

2. you can play melodic songs in an acoustic guitar and it has melodic tune... and playing melodic songs first as a beginner will help you to enhance your guitar skills...

3. strings of acoustic guitars are not that hard for your fingers...

I don't think it's been mentioned, but there are two types of acoustic guitars, classical/Spanish with nylon strings, and the more conventional steel string guitars. If you're interested in learning how to read music while learning how to play, I suggest learning on a classical guitar. You can get more of the fundamentals from doing so.

^ But using the nylon strings won't toughen up your finger tips or help you build callusses like the steel strings... however, on my acoustic (non spanish style) i use the nano coated strings... they are easier on my finger tips (i got soft... sadly) but it's still toughening up my fingers... PLUS the nano coated steel strings (actually i think they are 60% brass) last a LOT longer..
Nylon strings break VERY easily AND they give a completely different sound.

While steel strings (or any variation thereof) gives the typical sound of an acoustic and
a. Don't break as easily
b. Toughen up your fingertips
c. Last longer
d. Don't stretch as much (not constantly tuning)
e. are more readily available
f. are used by more people
g. give you the sound of a rock/folk/country/pop whatever your going for... things you'd hear on the radio - unless you listen to spanish radio stations...

Strings not hard for your fingers ive been playing for 10 years and hardly ever play my acoustic and i use size 9s and 10s on my electric so when i go back to my acoustic after like a month or 2 i can barley play the thing cause the strings are harder to hold down (should probs play it more often just being lazy and stickin with the electric :P)

acoustic first

Yeah, acoustic first. My recommended guitar is an Epiphone AJ-7. It's really cheap (less than $100 at Musician's Firend) and has good playability. When you get used to Electric guitars, I suggest a Fender Strat or Epiphone Les Paul Studio; they both have excellent playability and good sound

i think a lot of it depends on the style of music you want to play.

but for beginning you should definitely start out with an acoustic. i don't think it matters too much between classical/spanish or one with steel strings--they both have their ups and downs. i wish i had started on a standard steel string acoustic because i'm small and i have smaller hands so playing a classical spanish was a stretch for me, but it did help me to strengthen my fingers & nylon strings are less painful than steel strings. but if your hands are bigger than mine and you don't mind the strings being slightly more uncomfortable than nylon ones, then a standard steel string would be just fine.

you should probably first learn the basics of the guitar on an acoustic and then if you want to play songs that gear more towards electric you can later work your way there.

ive been playing electric guitar for about a year now. its all depending on what your style is, you dont need an acoustic to start off.

i think that you should start off with an acoustic. you have to learn all the scales and chords first..all the basics and with an acoustic guitar you can take it just about anywhere with you to practice!(and you will most definately want to practice at least an hour a day) anddddd you dont need an amp for an acousitc. GOOD LUCK WITH GEETAR!!
