Deputy Prime Minister and National Policy Minister Naoto Kan, who has been generally seen as having shown little presence since assuming his government posts, said Wednesday having such concerns over him would be a waste of time. Kan made the remarks in response to criticism from Yasutoshi Nishimura of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party in parliament that the National Policy Unit is not functioning well and that Kan has failed to live up to the public’s expectations for the new government body.
‘‘Deputy Prime Minister Kan assumed the post (of national policy minister) with great fanfare, but he has not shown any presence,’’ Nishimura said during the House of Representatives’ plenary session. ‘‘Exactly what are you doing?’’ Kan, a heavyweight in the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, responded sarcastically, ‘‘I appreciate your concerns over our policy on budget compilation, the National Policy Unit and also over me.’’
