Interracial marriage denied in Louisiana
Posted 11/4/09
I know, I know, this article is older than two weeks, but since I've not seen it anywhere mentioned in these forums, I've come to the conclusion that I'll post it anyway in spite of the fact that it's not the newest News.

And I mean, God, seriously..you'd think that we're in the Twenty-first century America. Okay, it happened in Louisiana..but still..

Here goes the article:

Oct. 15, 2009

HAMMOND, La. - A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

Neither Bardwell nor the couple immediately returned phone calls from The Associated Press. But Bardwell told the Daily Star of Hammond that he was not a racist.

"I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said. "My main concern is for the children."

‘I feel the children will later suffer’
Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves," Bardwell said. "In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer."

If he does an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Thirty-year-old Beth Humphrey and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.

Humphrey told the newspaper she called Bardwell on Oct. 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license signed. She says Bardwell's wife told her that Bardwell will not sign marriage licenses for interracial couples.

"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzman. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

‘He knew he was breaking the law’
The ACLU was preparing a letter for the Louisiana Supreme Court, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell and see if they can remove him from office, Schwartzman said.

"He knew he was breaking the law, but continued to do it," Schwartzman said.
.....

Notice the red part? Yeah, well..try harder, dick.

Reminds me of a user here on the cr forums calling all interracial kids ugly
Anyway, do you think they'd get married? O;

Why don't they marry in some other state? Or call another person. I know we always meet crazy/stupid people with their own look on this planet but what's the problem? I'm already 22 and I'm only starting ignoring such people only now because I was always a bit weak person Who cares about this person's opinion? Yes, I heard people like that had an unesy life back in the school but we always have lots of problems no matter what colour we are. It doesn't depend on your race even. All the different kids live an awful life in school, not only mixed-races. The point is: you have only one nervous system so stop wasting it on morons and call for another person to help you to get married.

Why do they have to marry in a different state just because there's some dick who's got the power to deny them the right to marry each others? Just because he's an asshole doesn't mean that one should ignore his actions, especially since he's not just a simple person. He's got power. He's wielding the law book left and right, but is breaking the law. He ought to be dismissed.

Well possibly they'll win over him. Also who is he to care about their children? Needless to talk about "I care about all the kids in the world" because I'm sure he lies. He just doesn't like mixed kids and won't to see them, that's what I think. Ah, nuts, a lot of people are idiots here. If they have power - this is worse.

And so, we judge an entire nation by the actions of one narrow minded idiot in Louisiana. As for being an interracial couple, I can say that I, for one, never saw it that way. It's kind of on the same level as wondering why some cats have leopard spots and others are tiger striped.

You are what you are and if you meet somebody that likes you like that, then isn't that enough? Sure there will be difficult times and misunderstandings, that sort of stuff almost never has anything to do with having different colored skin, but rather, more likely you don't speak the same language and did not learn the same social customs.

There are stronger differences than just color when people from two different cultures meet. How do you say simple things like "Hello"? Do you Bow , Shake Hands or maybe Hug? When asked to sit, do you drop to the ground where you are, or look for the nearest chair?

I am just a white anglosaxon that eats with chopsticks because thirty years ago they became a daily part of my life. I wouldn't change any of that just to be with somebody that came from the same country or genetic background as mine.

They will win over this guy because as a Public GOVERNMENT official he should have done his job. If he was smart he would have kept his mouth shut and asked another official to do his job while mantaining his bigoted ideology. But instead he chose to incriminate himself by his words and his actions. There is a reason why civil rights exist in the US. It reminds me of this really old article about a sheriff that lost his job because he was found to be an active white supremacist. Don't give these freakish folks a position of authority because they will violate the law due to their own prejudice.

"I would probably do the same thing again," he said. "I found out I can't be a justice of the peace and have a conscience".

Justice my arse. On my planet we call it bullshit hidden behind the racist mind.

Lol, the irony behind this is awful.

By the way....
How even did he refuse to marry this couple? I mean it's your job and if you:
1. Find the hubby-to-be ugly and wanna tell the bride she'll be sorry later
2. Find the bride-to-be ugly etc.
3. Don't like the couple in general (there is something odd about 'em, man)
... and lots of other reasons

it's not your business and you MUST marry any women and men no matter if they look bizzarre or you imagine their children being mixed race and you dislike it. This is kinda stupid. No, this is really stupid. This man has an opinion which is kinda weird (maybe he's not racist but just a geek and fantasies about future children of couples he marries) but this is not his business wtf!

And actually I always thought that people working in such places are mostly coo-coo. I mean what's so interesting in a stamping passports and saying "Do you want to marry" thousands times a day. Office workers are always (well often) World of Warcraft geeks, Internet perverts or pseudo-psychologists like this old cock.

I am actually from LA and while on the front it might seem off setting, check the stats for that area of the country.

I honestly think the judge prob thought he did what he thought best. He was wrong but cut him some slack cause I think it was not a racist move.
