I also have seen them react to "madam" or "lady". But from my experience "Miss" is the least problematic.

Well, I've learned it's no big deal to most women. But i use the term girl simply to be cute. I'd say woman if it were more formal. I hear its good to be flexible.

girl = young
woman = old 30+

a girl is generally someone i would consider dating. a woman(old) or little girl(too young) is not.

Well, girls are complex like that. Calling them, as others before me have said, a woman makes them feel way beyond their years and calling them a girl makes them get the feeling that they're immature or something.

I'm 15 and get mistakened for a college student outside of school. In school I get mistakened for a senior when I'm only a sophomore.

*shruggs* Doesn't really bother me what I get called by the two, (I get both) until some middle age women ask if I'm the little sister of of my friend who is infact younger than me just because of slight height differences. Honestly, many people (asians particulary; I'd know since I'm one and deal with this everytime theres a mob of them) seem to define "the taller you are, the more mature and older you must be." I'm friggin 5"3, I would like it if people didn't assume I'm the little sister of some 11 year old thats 5"4. On second thought, why would you assume any two people hanging out with each other are related at first sight? I find that extremely weird. Especially those instances where they ask if your the wife of your 30 year old cousin or if your 10 year old cousin is your daughter.

In my case I'm used to being called older, but I hate it when people make assumptions that are too far off my age. More so in being called alot younger than I really am. Girl doesn't bother me until you add "little or baby" in front of it. Woman makes me feel old, I feel so, doesn't bother me either though. I'm heading towrads 16 in January (noo!!!!!). I wanted to stay 14.

Being called girl= usually ranges from immature-normal representation of age. Though makes some women feeling old and depressed happy.
woman= a bit too mature if your under 20 in alot of cases.

It's like Miss & Ma'am, sometimes the difference will be stressed if you happen to meet those kinda people
