There is no Race?
Posted 2/11/13
I like to race. Used to watch Formula 1 Racing.

In a wonderful perfect world race mean nothing.
Race is a creation of mankind, to divide the mighty from the weak. All for more power.

Race doesn't exist. We must unite, cuz when the aliens are coming we're screwed.

You are right, but the aliens are also part of our family.

The race of God. We are all descendents of God.

Yeah, the idea of race is an archaic and benign belief held on to by people not wanting to let go of grudges.

Even if race doesn't exist, the fact that the idea has been held onto for so long still effects people to this day and probably always will.

As far as I understand it's not as simple as just "darkening to prevent it from sunrays".
That, at least as far as I interprate it, implies that if they just moved to a colder climate, their skin would turn pale, which is not the case.

But skin colour is indeed a product of natural selection, which happened in order to adapt better to the climate they reside in.
But that's a development that happened over the span of generations.

...huh.

I'm so very certain that this is part of English curriculum. As in, we're actually told this in school, in my country, at a relatively early age.

While Race is in large part a societal construct the idea of post racial thinking in this era or in the context of Western/American culture is a foolhardy one in this moment. I see many posts in this thread essentially decrying racial identity. I would say that racial and cultural identity are important and shouldn't be eschewed wholly. Think of what it means to have ones cultural or religious identity taken away and if that identity is based on race carrying over to racial discrimination. I'm thinking of the rather prevalent use of redface and yellowface in media or at costume parties with people using an excuse that we are all "one race." It may seem a small argument but consider that First Nation groups only recieved the basic human right under the law to practice native religions freely in the mid 1970's and that during that same time forced assimilation programs via Indian Boarding School were still ongoing stripping native peoples of their identity even going to far as rendering many north american languages extinct. Sexual assault was endemic in those schools and to this day rates of rape for native women can be as high as one in three. So while it may be genetically true that we are all human we have not always respected the humanity of our fellow man. Racial identity and cultural practices and traditions help to define and enrich humanity as a race not diminish it and its value is often poorly understood by members of a dominant culture or race that has never had its identity stripped from them or experienced endemic discrimination based on color, creed, or both.

It seems a lot of people are trying to whitewash the divisions we can plainly see in the natural order, in order to promote some new age spiritual idea that we're all one.

In nature we see the forces of natural selection turning some creatures into predators and some into prey, causing some species to advance and some species to stagnate or even go extinct, as well as create an incredibly complex hierarchy, like a class system in human society. It's full of violence, competition, hardship and desperation. The same forces are at work in human society. There's no reason to assume that there aren't forces driving us into different species, that that isn't already happening.

But this is a naturalist viewpoint. Is it spiritually and ethically good for us to just accept the natural order, or should we be trying to make people one? Making a cohesive collection of human societies is much more complicated than genetics, but genetics goes hand in hand with history, and history is the main aspect of race. And it's not meaningless, people suffer pain and it's handed down through generations until the society they're in finds a way to resolve it, peacefully or violently.

I guess what I'm saying is, it's good to want Society and our ideas about eachother to evolve, but you're not going to accomplish that by just pretending our differences don't exist, genetic or otherwise.

Ok so I recently saw the news and saw that some scientists have researched that there is no race, as in color. It's basically, our skin darkens to how hot the sun is. Like if your skin is dark it means that your skin is protecting it from the heat rays.. or something like that. So I thought about it. That does make sense.. in places like Africa, their skin is dark because the sun is really hot. I don't know if I'm explaining this right or clear enough but you should get the picture.

But then what really got me was when they said that everyone was from Africa and eventually migrated to other places.. I doubt that though.. So what do you think??

I think that it would make sense that we came from africa, every species had to originate somewhere, and africa has (or perhaps it would be best to say had) a very diverse animal population... It doesn't make sense to me for an entire species (by that i mean a species in full bloom) to suddenly appear across the entirety (or at least the eastern half) of the world all at once.

A friend of mine about to graduate with an anthropology degree told me that her professors no longer accept the use of the term race in any class papers, except in the all-encompassing "human race" sense. If more specific than that, "ancestry" or "heritage" is to be used. If not, points will be deducted for improper use of "race".

^good

but what explains why people from different part of the world have distinct facial features. For example, an asian and white person look completely different because of facial features not skin color
