Japanese government offices and state-funded corporations improperly spent a record 236.45 billion yen in taxpayers’ money through 717 accounting gimmicks in fiscal 2008, the Board of Audit said Wednesday.
The sum almost doubled in the year ended last March from the previous year’s 125.36 billion yen due to inclusion of surplus funds in the government’s special accounts and other funds deemed “not being used effectively.” They accounted for more than 40% of the total, it said.
