Anime is a form of Cartooning, just because its from japan or follows a more drama story line doesn't make it any less a cartoon. its like a cookie cutter scheme, facial shap very similar in each character same with body structure. You could take the scenery in a lot of anime shows and use them directly in so called American Cartoons.
If you say a cartoon is something that's suppose to be funny, then whats all those cartoons that are based on comic books? Aren't most Anime based on manga which are comic books?

Well... I guess that's true. I think the major difference between Japanese anime and American cartoons is that Americans tend to view animation as mainly for children (though that view has started to change a bit), and the rest of the world, especially Japan, tends to see anime as being for all ages, adults and children.

And about the drawing style, honestly it depends on the animator and the director, but in truth with the way the Japanese economy and the anime industry is, innovation just isn't affordable (which is too bad). And I disagree that anime has a 'drama' storyline. There are plenty of children's anime that doesn't have much drama. Same for American cartoons.

The main difference between the two is the demographics the show is aimed for and the art style being used (and please don't tell me that voice actors in Japan are better then American ones, American cartoon voice actors like Kari Wahlberg and Tara Strong are acting gods), but others yes of course they're both styles of animation, and if anyone disputes that then I'm ashamed.

Generally, Cartoon means "Animation" in general. "Anime" is Japanese animation, a Japanese cartoon.

Anime is a subgenre of cartoons, it seems that it has taken on it's own cult following.

Shiroyukilce: What's so human-like about gigantic eyes and a point for a nose?

I'm pretty sure this is a double though.

But yes, anime is a cartoon.
Anime is just the short form of the word Animation.
Animation is cartoon.
I'm pretty sure if you asked a Japanese person what anime or manga in English was, they'd probably answer 'Cartoon' and 'Comic book'.

EDIT:

Whoa. I was thinking of X-men too when I read that LOL.
X-men's art is more proportionate to the real human body than anime is.

If its drawn, colored, and place into an animation it is the same as cartooning the only differences is the storyline, but I won't go to that point since every animation series has them.

They're both drawn and place into comic books(manga) and some are animated. What they do have in common is the storyline but every animated series have them even cartoon.

It's the same if you're talking about what they are. Both are moving drawings on tv, both are drawn and both come from different sources but that's all... as a whole, they're not the same.
