Just found out about this thread....
been watching many crunchyroll anime series on PC, but would love to watch it on TV via PS3.
With the apps, I'm surprised there hasn't been an Crunchyroll app for PS3, that would be awesome. I haven't tried using the browser yet, but I would prefer to have a dedicated app for it on PS3. I hope those at Crunchyroll would get one done soon. If not, is it due to technical difficulties or legality issues?

Yeah it would be nice for a app for a gaming platform. I remember sometime awhile ago CR did a survey to see what systems people have and depending if you had all of them which one you used the most. Hopefully they'll be able to get some sort of deal with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo so they too can start to stream via their gaming platforms. But who knows what kind of crap they'll have to go through for those companies to even consider doing that.

My guess is that Crunchyroll will have a harder time getting permission from the Japanese content provider companies to allow an APP for a console rather than actually making, submitting, and getting an app approved by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo.

I think they have some similar problems with the Roku box. If I remember correctly I read somewhere on the forums that not all shows are available on the Roku. I do not know if it is because CR is catching up on re-encoding everything for the Roku or because some of the content providers wont allow certain shows to be played by the Roku box.

It also could be how many resources they have to re-encode every video again as they would have to do it for each console. Storage is cheap, but so are the CR subscriptions so CR may just not have the money yet to pay for the extra storage and servers required to be able to host videos for each of the consoles.

There are many more other reasons I am sure but these are my best guess as the top hurdles they may have to get over.

I am actually really interested in how their setup is for hosting and re-encoding the videos. (What kind of server farms and how many resources they have dedicated to each task and what kind of software they are allowed to use for transcoding)

It just seems that sometimes when BazouKazuma posts saying that he is re-encoding certain videos, or that he has moved a certain series to the top of the queue, that it sometimes seems to take a while for the video to be available. (Is it because encoding takes a while, or is it because the encoding is done remotely and the uploading part takes a while? ect...) So I am just interested as a computer geek and network administrator on the specs of their setup.

Make sure you comment, too, asking for an application. If we get both sides of this ball rolling, it may happen sooner.

I've been using CR on my PS3 up until today, since I got my computer. It works rather well for me, except every time they run a Final Fantasy XIII-2 ad, the browser freezes up and blanks the screen because 'there is not enough memory' . If you're all having problems, try the mobile version of CR. It doesn't display right, in fact it displays horribly wrong, but the videos load just fine. That's what I do.

Hopefully, the next PlayStation will have something of a better Internet browser.

http://m.crunchyroll.com will take you to Crunchyroll Mobile.

Today was an update on the PS3, Firmware version 4.1, complete with a new browser version. CrunchyRoll works (KIND OF!) - You can stream in SD and 480p. It looks like it TRIES to do 720p and 1080p but can not keep up. I am pretty sure (Make that very sure since I've streamed HD anime off my computer through PS3 Media Server) that the PS3 can handle HD streaming video, it's just not quite optimized well for sites like CR.

Still, it was nice to see that 480p streams so smoothly. I had not tried it previously, so I am not even sure if this is an improvement.

SD and 480p streams have always worked with the PS3 browser. The browser update that the 4.1 update broguht changed nothing that would allow better playback of flash content. The only changes that were made had to do with how the browser rendered certain parts of a page to better format it.

720p also works on my PS3 but the video playback is choppy. Until Sony updates the flash player on the PS3, we will never be able to stream 720p or 1080p flash content.

Why is Sony so lazy? Why can't they just update the darn flash? the only updates sony ever does is making it so jailbreaks aren't possible, each update they will throw in a little extra but their main reason they push it is because of jailbreaks...

I don't really post much, in fact, not at all, but this is one issue I really wish we could get more info or movement on. I'm sure you guys are trying, as I'm sure you realize the massive amount of potential customers you would acquire from console gamers, a la Netflix, so I'm sure that there has to be something going on with this.

Anyway, hopefully we get a PS3 app as I'm tired of watching my shows in 480p. It's the resolution of the poor. Pttewy

I appreciate any and all replies related to this topic.
