Could the world's lone but weary superpower actually learn something from China? It's a politically incorrect question, of course. China is an authoritarian nation; its ruling Communist Party deals ruthlessly with any challenge to its hegemony. It remains, relatively speaking, a poor, developing country with huge problems to confront, massive corruption and environmental degradation being Nos. 1 and 1a. Still, this is a moment of humility for the U.S., and China is doing some important things right. If the U.S. were to ask the Chinese what it could learn from their example, it might gain some insight into what it's doing right and wrong. Here are five lessons from China's success story:

1. Be Ambitious

2. Education Matters

3. Look After the Elderly

4. Save More

5. Look over the Horizon

.

^ No country is perfect.

NOT EVEN JAPAN for all you japanophiles out there who believe otherwise.

Edit; come to think of it, I should add to discussion...
China's not such a bad country, hell we can all learn a little from each other, amirite?

since china is also very much a world power maybe the US should learn more about the world than so many americans seem to know.

its actually quite funny how many US citizens are clueless about things outside they're country.

hell even Russia is still a world power those few thousand nukes didn't just evaporate no matter how much the US tries to deny the countries power and the economy there is no longer in the toilet as it was plus that rather large standing army kind of makes saying they are not a world power pretty stupid.

This article is about how the US could improve. It says nothing about China (or Japan) being perfect. Personally I do agree with all 5 points. And of course no country is perfect, but this isn't about being perfect either. It's about getting better.

These are my thoughts Madienatorr

If it wasn't for the US, there would be no Chinese success story this soon. I mean, who would help them, Russia? Russia is scared of China, they are not going to help. Japan just about took over the place right before WWII. British gave Taiwan back not too long ago. India keeps to themselves along with most European Nations. Blue helmets at the UN will only help if it is anti-US and they get to control something of China's. NATO is a joke. That should stand for "Not Able To Organize".

1. Be Ambitious - this story shows how the US DOT is a JOKE, really, a joke! Everything the government gets involved in turns to shit. Decrease the size and let the private class take over.

2. Government schools - US government schools just program kids now-a-days to be the perfect workers now. Just smart enough to run the equipment and dumb enough to do what they are told.

3. Elderly - Current US Government does not want to look after the Elderly anymore, why? Because the Elderly cost the government money by using health care. This is why the government is focusing on the middle age and younger. They use far less medicare and pay more into it. So, therefore, the government makes money not lose. Then turn around and give illegals free health care o.O

4.Save - Yes agreed, kick out all of the liberals and greedy politicians so we can.

5. look to the horizon - capitalism is slowly coming to china. The people got a taste of it and want more.

In short the US does not need to learn anything from The People's Republic of China. Just needs to do some spring cleaning in washington. This place is becoming like corrupt Mexico and China is becoming like 1940s US

Offending? The five points are good. China first learn to open its door to foreign trades and investments, and look at the speed its economy rises. Well, countries have to learn from each other to improve, there's nothing embarrassing about that.

"If it wasn't for the US, there would be no Chinese success story this soon"

that's funny the Chinese have prospered in spite of the US would be more accurate. they out produce the US in pretty much everything they decide to excel at try going through your house and find all the products (Made in China) there. you'd be surprised how many you have.

if it wasn't for China keeping North viet nam in check the US would have a serious shit storm to deal with. as long as China keeps their thumb on that little psycho his nukes will never be a threat.

the British recently gave back Hong Kong ( Taiwan is a disputed state)

China having the Largest standing army in the world with technology and nukes which rival the US's is not very likely to Need help as your trying to imply. they also are well on the way to dwarfing the US as the most influential economy in the world.

George W wanted to copy China but he lived in the US with a constitution which him and the ultra conservatives did their best to quash during his term in office.

Guantanamo prison remind you of Chinese prisons a bit? squash freedom to be more like a totalitarian regime hmm how about the USA PATRIOT Act. that should help get there. then its time to centralize the policing of the people so lets create Homeland security with a bunch of vaguely worded directives giving them ways around the constitution and courts for better control. yup good old george was learning from China too bad what he wanted was the worst parts.

I didn't see you cite the source of this article anywhere. As far as I'm concerned, it's poor internet etiquette to plagiarize on message boards, whether it's intentional or not. This article is originally from Time and can be found here:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1938671,00.html

All of the points in the article are good, but I don't think that the United States can learn exclusively from China - we could learn a lot from many nations. We've become a bit too separated from the rest of the world lately, and the foreign policy of the previous administration is partially responsible for that. If the United States expects to succeed in the future, we need to set aside ethnocentricity. We need to improve our nation and help to improve other nations instead of resting on our laurels.

No nation is perfect, but we'd all be better off if we made humble attempts to learn from others.

Stop pretending to be righteous and stop pretending to have free and fair media.
