Racism Over the Internet
Posted 11/24/09 , edited 11/24/09
It would be nice if we all could remain as civil as possible. Hopefully we can all discuss this topic intelligently without insulting one another.

I believe many of us have experienced or seen racism in real life, but not as much as we have on the internet.
Since the creation of the World Wide Web, many people have used the internet for different reasons, but it seems the most common practice is to spread hatred.

As you know, it’s easy to type unintelligently online with little to no consequence. A more common example of this can be seen on YouTube:

Not only there, but any other social website where people frequently post comments such as Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, XboxLive, and MySpace (of course).

In reality, these people would probably be dealt with severely, so they hide behind computers because they have no other way to express their biased views. They’re inadequate, angry, and just plain terrible at internet rebuttals -_-.

Frankly, I find them pathetic. People need to realize that a person's actions have nothing to do with the color of their skin, but for the environment they've grown into or the way they were raised. You'd think people would be smarter than this, I guess not.

So my questions are:

How do you feel about racism over the internet? Should it be taken seriously?
Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?
And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll? (I know I have).

Also, this article also goes with the topic:

I've come across these situations too many times, and honestly I believe it needs to be dealt with. If not on other websites, than it defiantly will on CR, I'll make sure of it.

1.) No, unless it is being used as an argument to annoy the person..
2.) Yeah, both sides were getting all heat up, Nigga vs Asians.. Well, in the end, they almost fought, but luckily, I went home, so I didn't know the outcome.. ^^
3.) Crunchyroll? A lot, even on the chat rooms (while idle/ browse tabbing of course)

Not a pretty impressive argument on my side, but oh well, opinion/ story counts ..

1) i never take it seriously anymore since it's just plain ignorance anyway :)
2) i try to avoid stuff like that cause stupidity seems to attack you when you're in a situation like that
3) millions of times =T i stopped reporting it because it'll keep happening here anyway on this stupid site.

you gotta just ignore that stuff anyway cause words don't have power unless you let it.

Sometimes, the remarks they make are just for jokes. But when it gets too far, like offensive and ignorant stereotyping, that's when I go all King Kong at people. They should really learn to think before they speak.

Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?

Not yet, but I think I will. :/

And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll? (I know I have)

Yes, especially on Filipinos, but I can understand why.

Well I feel offended that people can make fun of my culture , because half of the rumors aren't even true. I don't waste my time talking to the pathetic people who think they act ignorant and arrogant because all they want is attention and see who has the most racist joke to make everyone "LOL".

Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?
Yes I have been , Its not really pretty .__. lots of whining little idiots complaining how we do this , how we do that .__.

And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll? (I know I have).
The chat room is filled with racist people.

as the people above me stated . Ignore it if you can..

I don't think racism should be even considered as an insult over the net.
What if I said all of you are lifeless?
Will you take it seriously?

There is nothing offending about racism over the net. For me at least; and it should be nothing for all of you too.

I think it's hurtful. Whether they are being serious or if they're just 12 year olds (or older people with that level of mentality) looking for trouble, it irks me off. I don't know. I just don't really like racism, I think. In regards to it being taken seriously, I think so. I guess racist jokes aren't that bad if they're just for fun, but there's a point where it gets too far and people need to know that it's not okay.

Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?
In lots of ways. I've been used as an example as to why my nationality is "bad", I've had my race/nationality put down, I've argued with racists... Ect. It's not amusing at all. I actually end up getting frustrated, because it seems that racists also tend to be stubborn.

And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll?
That goes without saying.

Black people steal the white man's jobs since last year and "are" women down with the President?

Okay first off honey there's no such thing as black man, white man jobs. I don't know who taught you such a thing but whoever told you that obviously has a narrow mind. Second of all black men are able to work in any work field that a white man is able to work in. Also, just to let you know our president is biracial. Therefore, it really shouldn't bother you that "your women" are "down with the president." As long as two people are happy with one another and can accept each others different cultural backgrounds then that's all that matters. As long as they're in love then it really shouldn't matter what others think. Besides, many children are brought up not liking other kids because they're a different color from them or they speak a different language from them. I believe racism is NEVER going to end because people are raising their young children to be prejudice/racist and when those kids who are being taught this negative way have kids, GUESS WHAT? I'm sure they're going to raise their kids to be the same way. Unfortunately, until then we're just going to have to get used to it. This is sad to say but it's true.

How do you feel about racism over the internet? Should it be taken seriously?

I believe racism is a big problem over the internet. Gaia93 is right. I also believe people hide behind their computers to tell how they really feel because if they did it in public they would probably end up in a body bag. I have a moderate answer when it comes to "Should it be taken seriously." I believe it should be taken seriously because the person with all the anger towards another's race obviously is going through something that made them not like that race or maybe they're jealous. But if they can't show this "problem" in public then no it really shouldn't matter because that just comes to show that you have a phony on your hands. Someone that wants to say how much they hate a certain race on the computer but when they're face to face with someone of this cultural background it's "hey, how you doing?"

Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?

Yeah, I have but I was taught not to stoop to the level of racism because no matter how much some people may think they're superior to another race, they're not. When it comes judgement day God is not going to say "Oh you're white you're going to heaven." or "Oh you're asian you're going to hell. He's going to judge us all on how we lived our life (positively and negatively), not the color of our skin. People really need to realize that.

And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll?

Yes I have. :(

Actually not too sure on this one because I'm guessing like 90% of the time it's trolls just trying to get a rise out of people and I find it's best not to feed them... I realise it's hurtful and a problem... but even if it wasn't all the trollin' what could we do about it? Erg.

Have you ever been in the middle of a racists argument?
Nope. I generally tend to steer clear. When both sides are yelling profanities, why help them spread the hate?

And have you ever scrolled upon racism on Crunchyroll?
No... and in general I haven't really. I guess this is why I'm not taking this quite as seriously as some other people in the thread. I don't mean to sound like I don't care btw it's just not a topic I'm particularly passionate about. But no, I've not had anything thrown at me on CR tbh... maybe because I'm white and I often find the white people starting it... & not really seen so much in the way of other people getting it... I need to stay in more, rofl.

Bizzarely the class I was studying at the back of today were covering racism. Does the word 'cracker' actually come from the assumption that most whiteys do crack? xD wtf
