At the auditions for campus drama What’s Up

What’s Up — the upcoming campus drama set in a university musical department — has finished its open auditions with 10 new discoveries. These fresh faces will join the main cast, which features Im Joo-hwan (Tamra the Island), Im Joo-eun (Hon), Big Bang’s Daesung, Jeon Hye-jin (Smile), and model Lee Hyuk-soo.

Hence the first round of the audition process attracted more than 10,000 hopefuls. Producers had originally planned to cast six out of the open auditions, but ended with ten. They range in age from 21 through 28.

Writer Song has had an active say in the casting from the start, and said, “Those who made it to the final round are all outstanding. The final decision wasn’t based on who did better or worse, but who fit the drama’s roles best.” She added that she would write every one of the 24 finalists into the scripts for Episodes 1 and 2, so they would at least appear once.

Oh Man-seok joins campus drama What’s Up

Finally, some more news on What’s Up! Actor Oh Man-seok (Everybody Cha Cha Cha, King and I) has been added to the cast of the drama that’s set in a university musical theater department and written by Story of a Man and Sandglass writer Song Ji-nah.

This casting makes sense, since Oh has extensive musical and theater experience, and is in fact currently working on a stage play called True West, which opens on November 26. Oh will play a professor in What’s Up, and called it an honor to be able to work in a Song Ji-nah drama.

News has been pretty quiet on this show, which still doesn’t have a broadcast station or an airdate. (Producers are hoping for an early 2011 premiere.) However, I’m not worried that this production’s in trouble (unlike, say, golf drama Birdie Buddy — what’s going on there?), because of its status as a buzz project with its star scriptwriter and promising cast of up-and-coming new stars, which includes Big Bang’s Daesung, Tamra the Island’s Im Joo-hwan, and Hon’s Im Joo-eun.

We haven’t had much news about the musical-themed drama What’s Up, but the production has just released a four-minute trailer giving us our first real look at the show. And I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with the results; the characters seem well-developed and the cast looks strong.

In the trailer, several students at the university musical department are asked why they decided on their major. Series lead Im Joo-hwan (Tamra the Island) kicks us off with a punchline — it’s because he made a mistake. Contrast that to his nervous, earnest colleague, who declares that being a musical actor “is my destiny.”

You may recognize the opening song; it’s the famous solo from the Jekyll & Hyde musical, and you can hear Jo Seung-woo‘s version here. It was, in fact, a very popular pick among aspiring actors when the drama held its open auditions.

Meanwhile, Daesung seems to be playing an affable sort, which suits his personality; in contrast, I love that Im Joo-eun (Hon) is playing a surly, tough type who retorts to their teacher (musical and television actor Oh Man-seok) she doesn’t care to become a star. Jang Hee-jin (brought in to replace Jeon Hye-jin) looks like the uptight, snooty type who clashes with Im Joo-eun’s laid-back attitude, while lanky model-turned-actor Lee Soo-hyuk is a reclusive genius composer who holds the other students in awe.

Im Joo-hwan’s main character has a few dryly humorous lines sprinkled throughout, such as, “What’s a musical?” He’s the outsider with a cynical take on this world that the others hold so dear, but I’m guessing that he’ll soon discover his own hidden talent, whatever that may be. (Funny enough, that reminds me of Kim Soo-hyun’s character in the similarly-themed Dream High, in that Kim’s character also gets his start for other reasons and then discovers his own skills once he’s part of the school. Even funnier, Kim and Im have long reminded me of each other — both have a similar tall, lanky appearance and strong, intense screen charisma.)

The drama, which still doesn’t have a solid airdate scheduled, is looking at a 2011 premiere

Daesung’s “What’s Up” drama to begin airing next month

Big Bang’s Daesung will finally make his small screen debut on March 21st through the musical drama, “What’s Up“!

On February 15th, producers of the show revealed that the series will be airing after SBS’s “Paradise Ranch” in the 9:00 PM KST time slot.

The drama is based on the true story of a musical class at the Chungkang College of Cultural Industries and aims to feature the dreams, passions, and love stories of the young musical majors. The drama has already received widespread attention because it’s both Daesung’s small screen debut, and is the work of writer Song Jina.

Daesung will be seen with his castmates Im Ju Hwan, Im Ju Eun, Jang Hee Jin, Lee Soo Hyuk and many other young rookie actors. Since they’re playing the role of 20-something theatre aspirants, each cast member received strict vocal and dance training for six months in preparation for their respective roles.

Currently, the drama has completed about 90% of its total filming after beginning last July.

MBN to air Daesung’s new drama, “What’s Up”, in December

It’s been confirmed that Big Bang‘s Daesung will be making his official comeback on TV through MBN‘s new drama, “What’s Up“!

MBC stated that “What’s Up” will begin broadcasting in December as a special weekend drama. The series will run for a total of 18 episodes, each lasting approximately 60 minutes long. While the drama was supposed to air back in March, numerous delays resulted in a decision to broadcast the series in December.

Drama enthusiasts have already shown their interest in the upcoming series, especially with Song Ji Na being the scriptwriter. Song is widely known for her successes in writing “Hourglass”, “The Pupil of Dawn”, and “Tawangsasingi“.

“What’s Up” is a drama about a group of students in their 20s studying a major in musicals; the series follow their experiences in happiness and hardships as they pursue their dreams, passions and love. Daesung will be part of` the main cast of the drama, which includes musical actors Oh Man Suk and Im Joo Hwan.

Daesung to Make First Public Appearance at “What’s Up” Press Conference

Big Bang’s Daesung will make his first public appearance at the press conference for upcoming MBN drama “What’s Up” on December 6. Since his car accident in May, Daesung has suspended all activities in Korea.

“Daesung will appear in public at the press conference with other cast members,” an MBN official told local media. Daesung will appear alongside Im Joo Hwan, Lee Soo Hyuk, Jang Hee Jin, and Yim Joo Eun for the first press meeting.

This will be the first official public event in Korea for Daesung since his car accident last May. He made an appearance at the MTV “European Music Awards” earlier this month with Big Bang, but that show took place in the UK.

“What’s Up” is a TV drama series featuring Daesung as the main lead character. The drama is about the live of theater major students. The 18-part series was filmed before Daesung’s car accident. Meanwhile, Daesung will make his first stage appearance at the “YG Family Concert” next month in Korea. Welcome back Daesung!
