Diet returns to normal, with focus on extending session

Wednesday 25th November, 10:33 AM JST

Diet proceedings returned to normal Wednesday for the first time since the ruling bloc forced passage of a debt repayment bill in the House of Representatives last Friday. The focus is now on whether the Diet session will be extended beyond Nov 30. The ruling Democratic Party of Japan is proposing to extend it to Dec 4, while the opposition bloc led by the Liberal Democratic Party is seeking to extend it to Dec 9.

The LDP is also demanding that the alleged political donation scandal involving Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama should be discussed at an extended Diet session. Yasukazu Hamada, a member of the LDP Diet affairs committee, told a press conference, ‘‘We will call for discussion time (on the issue) if the session is extended.’’ Another focus is on whether the first one-on-one debate between Hatoyama and LDP President Sadakazu Tanigaki would be held during the current session.

The opposition camp joined Diet deliberations after boycotting them following the forced passage of the debt repayment bill by the ruling coalition.
