Kim Ji-hoon returns with another lawyer role

Kim Ji-hoon played a smart lawyer in the fluffy romantic comedy Love & Marriage, and now he’s been cast as another lawyer in the upcoming SBS drama Pick the Stars [별을 따다줘], opposite Han Ji-hye.

The drama draws a love story between two co-workers at an insurance company, with Kim playing the company’s whip-smart lawyer. Because he carries the hurt of having been abandoned by his birth mother, he doesn’t easily open his heart to others. The female lead is a 25-year-old employee of the company who becomes responsible for her five younger adopted siblings after her parents meet with sudden deaths.

Although his previous characters have generally been in the “romantic guy” mold, Kim’s lawyer here is described as a cold “homme fatale.” He said of his character, “I’ll show him changing from a bad guy who doesn’t believe he can love into a person who falls in love.”

The drama is set to air on SBS on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning January 2010. Interestingly, it is set for the same premiere date as medical sageuk series Jejoongwon — for the first time ever, SBS will air two prime-time drama series on Monday and Tuesday. Originally, this was supposed to follow weekend show Smile, but when that show got extended 16 episodes, they moved this to follow Angel’s Temptation instead.

Choi Jung-won cast in Pick the Stars

Looks like Han Ji-hye is out, and Choi Jung-won is in. Much (perhaps even most) of the time, when productions announce that actors are almost cast in dramas (as in, the only thing left is to finalize paperwork), that turns out to be true. With Pick the Stars [별을 따다 줘], talk of Han Ji-hye taking the role was premature.

The new SBS drama has already cast Kim Ji-hoon as the male lead and comes from writer Jung Ji-woo of dramas How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor and Family Honor. Choi’s character is a bit immature at 25 years old, dreaming of a Cinderella scenario wherein a prince on a white horse will come along and change her life. After her parents suddenly die, she has to find her own way in the world.

Choi Jung-won was last in the KBS sageuk series Kingdom of the Wind last year, and says she was drawn to this character because she wanted to show the character as strong as well as pretty. Her character’s name is Jin Pal-gang, which incidentally means “deep red.”

Pick the Stars will be a 20-episode series that airs on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning January 4. It follows Angel’s Temptation, which moved up to the 9pm hour to avoid competition from Queen Seon-deok (which may have saved it, as it is doing strongly in that hour, albeit without competition). Then, SBS will also bring back drama programming to its 10pm hour, and will air medical sageuk Jejoongwon (about the first doctors of Western medicine in 19th-century Korea) right after Pick the Stars.

Hmm......I've only seen Choi Jung Won in All In and Kingdom of the Winds, so I'll reserve my judgement until I actually see the drama. ^.^ As of now, I think that Han Ji Hye is more "suited" for the male lead....my personal opinion, though. ^.^

Shin Dong-wook joins Pick the Stars

Finally, Shin Dong-wook returns in another drama role. He’s just been tapped to join the SBS weekend series Pick the Stars [별을 따다줘], which has already cast leads Kim Ji-hoon as a rich lawyer and Choi Jung-won as a woman who has to fend for herself after her parents die.

It’s been a long while since he was on television: I loved him in 2006’s Soulmate and was eager to see him keep working, but after 2006’s Cloud Stairs and 2007’s War of Money, he hasn’t been very active, aside from hosting cable variety program Tracking Your Ex-boyfriend.

In Pick the Stars, Shin Dong-wook will play Kim Ji-hoon’s brother as a man with painful memories of his youth. He’s described as “warm and perfect, but also with a timid and innocent side to his character.” That’ll contrast pretty strongly with the smooth player he played in Soulmate and the private loan shark he portrayed in War of Money, as well as Kim Ji-hoon’s character, who is described as a cold man who doesn’t believe in love.

The drama will replace Angel’s Temptation in January.

Posters for SBS’s Pick the Stars

New posters are also out for SBS’s other Monday-Tuesday drama Pick the Stars (airing alongside Jejoongwon in Angel’s Temptation’s slot), featuring its two leads, Choi Jung-won (Kingdom of the Winds) and Kim Ji-hoon (Love & Marriage).

In the drama, Choi Jung-won has to grow up suddenly when her parents’ death unexpectedly leaves to care for her younger siblings, one of whom includes child actor Park Ji-bin (Yi San, Boys Before Flowers). Choi’s character is named Jin Pal-gan, which means deep red; well, her siblings are all named after colors — Ju-hwang (orange), No-rang (yellow), Cho-rok (green), Pa-rang (blue).

Kim Ji-hoon has hitherto played mostly clean-cut good guys, but it looks like his cold-hearted lawyer character here has a bit of a slick (dare I say smarmy?) edge to him. Interesting — I’ve wanted to see him take a different sort of role, and this one looks different. Also appearing in the drama are Lee Soon-jae, Shin Dong-wook, Lee Kyun, Chae Young-in, and Jung Ae-ri.

Pick the Stars premieres January 4.
