A Man Called God prepares for overseas shoots

This news has been rumored for many months already, but finally it’s confirmed by producers: Song Il-kook is on for MBC’s upcoming drama series A Man Called God [신이라 불리운 사나이]. This means he’ll be following two big historical roles (Jumong, Kingdom of the Wind) with a contemporary one in this “love story about a modern-day hero.”

The drama is adapted from Park Gong-sung’s manhwa of the same name and, beginning in mid-February, plans for location shooting in Hawaii — a first for Korean dramas. Included on the list of shoot locales are the city of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, among other famous hot spots. The writer is Lee Hong-gu (whose online profile appears to be empty), while the director is Lee Hyung-sun (of 2007’s MBC series Be Near Me and the 2006 comedy film Moodori).

A Man Called God will follow the current weekend drama Assorted Gems and premiere on March 13.

MBC to film first episode of “The Divine Hero” in Hawaii

The Honoulu Advertiser reported:

The creators of a planned South Korean soap opera series promise that Oahu’s scenery and sense of ohana will get star-billing in an episode slated to be filmed here next month.

The weeklong shoot of “The Divine Hero,” a production of Munhwa Broadcasting Corp., set to start Feb. 16, will mark the first time a K-drama has been filmed on island, producers said, in a press conference held today to reveal details of the production.

“We definitely want to showcase Hawai’i,” said David Lim, a Hawaii partner and executive producer of the project, which has an $8 million budget for 24 episodes.

The first episode will include jet-skiing, horseback-riding and skydiving scenes.

Song Il Kook (of “Jumong”) plays the male lead, and Jung Ryu Won (of “Autumn Shower”) is the female star.

The script, based on one of Korea’s most popular comic books, follows a “Batman-like” protagonist — born in Korea, and raised in Hawaii — who is seeking vengeance for the murder of his parents.

Stay tuned for more on this drama, it seems to have a pretty interesting plot!

Thanks to Raven for the tip.

A Man Called God casts Han Chae-young

Finally, more news about upcoming MBC drama A Man Called God. Character descriptions have been released, as well as news that Han Chae-young has been cast as Song Il-kook’s leading lady.

Hard to believe she hasn’t acted in a television drama (in a role that wasn’t a cameo, as she did appear in a few episodes of Boys Before Flowers) in four years; how time flies! The last drama that Korea’s “Barbie doll” actress starred in was 2006’s underwhelming Fireworks (which was watchable mostly because of Kang Ji-hwan); before that, she had 2005’s Only You and Delightful Girl Chun-hyang. In the interim, she’s mostly done films, such as last year’s Good Morning, President with Jang Dong-gun and the more recent Girlfriends.

A Man Called God is a drama adaptation of a manhwa that is described as a “love story about a modern day hero.” The lead character is “Michael King,” also known as “Choi Kang-ta,” played by Song Il-kook, who vows to seek revenge upon the enemy who killed his parents. He becomes the boss of a secret underground organization and takes on a worldwide drug syndicate.

Han Chae-young plays a rookie journalist on the local news beat, “Jin Bo-bae.” As he falls in love with her, his belief that “I’ll use evil to punish a greater evil” is shaken. This role was initially going to be played by Jung Ryeo-won, but she dropped out due to personal reasons.

Kim Min-jong (Return of Iljimae) has been cast as an intelligent, sharp man; a rivalry springs up after he runs into Bo-bae, his first love. Complicating things is Han Go-eun (Can Anyone Love), who takes the role of a woman utterly devoted to Michael King who swears her undying love to him. However, when Michael returns to Korea, he falls for Bo-bae insead.

A Man Called God starts filming in February in Hawaii and will follow Assorted Gems on weekends. Its first episode will air on March 6.

Song Il-kook gets into shape for new drama

I almost can’t recognize Song Il-kook — star of period dramas Jumong and Kingdom of the Wind — in these newly released photos, which show off his trimmed-down and muscular body. Although normally a fairly fit actor, he is going for a new image in preparation for his upcoming drama, A Man Called God. His character displays outstanding martial arts skills as the leader of an underground organization who vows revenge on the enemy who killed his parents. (With his love interest being a rookie reporter, the modern-day hero story’s initial synopsis makes it sound like a kdrama version of Batman meets Superman.)

Song also dropped approximately 15 kg for this role — and if you don’t recognize him in the above figure either, this photo on the right may be more familiar. The 38-year-old Song is normally an exercise enthusiast (and previously completed an Iron Man competition), but intensified his workouts to eliminate most of his body fat and achieve his current physique.

A Man Called God also stars Han Chae-young, Kim Min-jong, and Han Go-eun and began shooting in Hawaii this month. The drama follows Assorted Gems in the weekend timeslot, and premieres on MBC on March 6.
