Breathing the Proper Way
Posted 1/13/12
In some ways, this sounds obviously ludicrous because obviously there are hundreds of millions of people breathing 'wrong' who still manage to live to a ripe old age. That said, a year or so back I went through a conscious effort to retrain my breathing as part of a program of meditation through the Shingon temple. Though there are other factors beyond breathing, my baseline blood pressure has dropped an average of 10/5 points. As a bit more evidence towards the effectiveness of changing one's breathing, if I'm having a stressful day where my heart rate and blood pressure is distinctly elevated, consciously altering my breathing (without any additional meditative, mental, or physical exercises) can lower heart rate and blood pressure about 5-10% within a few minutes.

Breathing in a manner more or less similar to what is described is an important part of maintaining mental balance and physical stamina during martial arts training, too.

Who knows, there might be some psychosomatic elements to what's happening... but heck, it works for me, and it's a lot cheaper than medications.

Theres a proper way to breath?!?!? I know there is one when you running long distances, you supposed to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth every two steps to prevent cramps and maintain a steady pace. O.O

we breathe like we breathe, there's not right or wrong way to breathe.. if you're not breathing properly, either there's something wrong with u like I mean sick, or ur about to die.. that's just my opinion, dont want to complicate things that much.. if ur alive, then I say ur breathing properly =)

I breathe how I breathe. However, I don't obnoxiously breath aloud like some people do.

Sleep Apnea - You stop breathing for seconds to minutes. You wake up feeling as tired as when you went to bed.

Yes, if I read it right, my abdomen doesn't move up and down when I breath, only my diaphragm.

(Lol. Lock if it seems stupid/pointless/lacks discussion :P)

This is breathing as described for the purpose of meditation & relaxation, not general breathing.

I breath the way that keeps me alive, not the way the doctors say.

That's like saying eating junk food is obviously ludicrous. They have similar effects, that in which it decreases your general biological productivity rate. The main point of this thread is to inform the mass on a more effective way of breathing.

As a singer, I've learned that breathing is foundation to proper production and sound quality. I'm merely spreading awareness on proper techniques.
