One of my aunt's god daughter's is Australian and I like it a lot. It sounds slightly British and yet it's distinctly different. It's pretty cool for me, no shame in having one.

Guess what? To Australians, most of the time our accent sounds like the person doesn't have an accent. For example, the only regular character on Lost who doesn't have a noticeable accent is Claire. Also, in House, Dr Chase is the only one with no accent. However, as someone pointed out there are differences in Australian accents, mainly related to socio-economic status and level of education. If the Melbourne suburbs are at all meaningful to you (and I doubt it) someone from a posh area like Toorak sounds very different from somone from Broadmeadows (very working class).
