Guess what? To Australians, most of the time our accent sounds like the person doesn't have an accent. For example, the only regular character on Lost who doesn't have a noticeable accent is Claire. Also, in House, Dr Chase is the only one with no accent. However, as someone pointed out there are differences in Australian accents, mainly related to socio-economic status and level of education. If the Melbourne suburbs are at all meaningful to you (and I doubt it) someone from a posh area like Toorak sounds very different from somone from Broadmeadows (very working class).

thats stupid - of course they have accents - EVERYONE HAS AN ACCENT. i am cursed with an irish/australian mix so no matter what country i'm in my accent sounds strange and the words i use are foreign. but i'm sick of people claiming that they don't HAVE an accent, that its everyone else who has one because thats just silly.
and honestly i don't see the appeal in aussie accents - they're harsh and crude and high pitched. give me the canadian accent any day

canadians have accents i never notice and yes i know everybody as an accent but i nver notice when i was little i thought canada was a state cause we went there so often people from michigan are said to sound slightly southern

Correct me if i'm wrong but I heard that there is a good way to tell an Australian and a New Zealander apart (is there such a word? ) Apparently if you make them say the words "Fish and chips" - the Australians will pronounce it "Fish and chips" but New Zealanders will pronounce it "Fush (as in 'flush' but minus the L) and chips"
