This piece was written for our speech choir.

Who are we, as a people?
They say that we aren’t Asian
Even though it’s what they say is a lie
It is because we act like Westerners!

There is nothing wrong with it
But we must find cultural balance
Between all the cultures among us
But first, we must remove the shackles!

The shackles of our colonial mentality
As well as the trait of being a copycat
Few among us now have any shred of being original
As well as being honorable

Our reputation has been tarnished
By the stereotypes the world associates us with
They say that we are incessant copycats, and idiots
However, they must be proven wrong!

Our “it will suffice” mentality is not enough
For we shall strive for excellence
We were once the pride of Asia
Now, we are now its shame!

The Filipino people is worth dying for, they say
Does this mean our stupidity and our complacency is worth it?
In reality, never!!
For we can change our attitudes into something far better than we can imagine

Some say, “Who are to do all this?”
Then again, we ask the same thing
For we have not the slightest idea to do
What you tell of us!

It is said that the youth are the hope of the Fatherland
And we are that youth!
It is time for us to reverse
Years of wrongs done

There have been many wrongs done over the years
One is our mob mentality
Just because everybody’s doing it
Doesn’t mean that we must imitate their wrong actions!

Where, oh where have our values gone?
True, change is vital to a society
But it must happen to a pace not too slow nor too fast
Our country it seems, is only having runaway progress

Just about everyone would say, “So what? At least we have it!”
Even though we have a great deal of development
It is more of unsustainable, and has had more wrong effects
It seems that what we have is counterproductive

All we have is “Filipino Pride”, but what do we have to be proud of now?
Being a copycat, corruption and stupidity? That’s not to be proud of
Our cockiness will bring us nothing, but our quick deaths
Deaths caused by poverty, and all the effects of it

Most will be offended, but it’s an inconvenient truth
That we imitate, and are cocky to the point that we are ridiculed
Our attempts to ridicule the world
Have only resulted with failure and tragedy

But, it’s not all doom and gloom, just yet
For we can change for the better
We must cast off the stereotypes that they give us
And develop individuality!

We must convince our leaders to do the same and lead by example
But we must replace the idiots within it
With those who are competent and reliable
If we are to get our success!

We need reforms and balances, to reverse the damage
Done over the years, and to advance forward
Not just to catch up, but also lead
Just like what we did in the 1950’s!

Our country needs us, the youth
For we are the hope of our land
This country needs our help, and so does the environment
So that our country will prosper with sustainability

We need the support of everyone else in this endeavor
The combatants must lay down their arms
For the peace, and for the people
Who are tired of the conflicts that constantly plague them for years

This country is weary of all the wars raging
We must not deal with terrorists peacefully
For they are only here to abuse
Their motives do no good, unless to themselves

Our country needs peace and prosperity
It must not be uneasy, or unsustainable
Many of us have become refugees
From all the poverty, and the wars

Most try to go to some promised land in the West
But they suffer the fate of racial prejudice
So prevalent in these lands
Then again, we are viewed as second-class

However, that is never an excuse for anything
We must rise to the occasion, and prove them wrong
Our forebears have done all sorts of greatness
It should mean that we could also do it!

The are many great achievements that we have done
From the rice terraces, to champions in sport and entertainment
But, we must not limit ourselves to these categories
For we can also achieve in other things as well!

Our fates are not sealed in stone
For we can change it, because we have free will
Real freedom doesn’t mean removing all the rules
For we have our human limitations

Even though we have our human limitations, it’s no excuse
For us to become weak and complacent
It is because we can become great, even in odds
That would favor otherwise

Our country is hailed for being liberal
But is mostly scorned for being excessive
The solution is a balance
Between the old and the new

There is a best of both worlds
We must not limit ourselves with excessive liberalism
Or excessive conservatism for that matter
The suffering of the people must be put into consideration

Our people are suffering for years
While the people in power are ignoring the people
Who had elected them in office
Now, the politicians must do something decent

After all, it’s their job, and their duty
Not only to the people, but also to the nation
The corrupt ones must go
For they are ruining everything

Their decadence goes no bounds
They plunder every last peso from the people
We are sick of it, and their lack of sympathy for us
The people to whom they shall serve!

Our military claims to be loyal to the Constitution
But there are many who aren’t, and are only loyal
To their corrupt civilian counterparts
The military must defend the country, and its people

We must strive to root our the corrupt colleagues in our ranks
For the people, and for the nation
A real leader serves the people
The people’s need for good governance must be met now

Unless we need another excuse for the people hating us
It must be done thoroughly, and with good conscience
For all this to succeed
All in due time

Education and good governance are tools for prosperity
But without the right people to use them for justice
All will be in vain
So we must take action, here and now

We can’t wait for someone else to take the lead
Action must be done, now
Our best chance of success lies in the present
With all the right actions and intentions!

The people must no longer suffer the pain of warfare
Nor the debilitating effects of poverty
We have had enough of the same
Year after year of inaction and incompetence!

Our government must lead by example
But the people must show the way first
Before they do something
We must not point fingers if something goes wrong

For when that happens, we are all to blame
No scapegoats, not even blaming it in one entity
For we are united as a nation
Our negative mentalities must melt away

Melt away into oblivion, and into the dustbin of history
We must succeed, but also be prepared
To embrace failure
We might fail now, but we can try again

As long as we live, there is hope
But, action must take place
The fatalism that we are plagued with must be gone
Replaced with optimism, and hope for the future

Our futures are what we want to be
Either dark and gloomy, or bright and glorious
The glories of our forebears must not be forgotten
For they can teach us valuable lessons

Same goes for the shameful acts
For they shall serve as an example
Of what not to do to repeat it
Our history provides us with examples, which we must not forget

We must not put too much glory in a figure or event
Nor too little to the heroes and their heroics
Our unity is our strength
And they have shown us that!

United we stand, divided we fail
That is what our country must be
Not divided into little groups, with biases
But united, with understanding and tolerance

The prejudice and biases that we have on our fellow countrymen
Must fade away, giving rise to tolerance, acceptance and understanding
The land and its people must live in harmony
And with that harmony, comes peace

What we say might seem impossible
But in reality, it never is
What we need is also the will
The will to make these things happen

Our successes, as well as our failures must serve us
As guides not just for us, but also for the nation
We must not be trapped in the past, nor lost in the future
For we live in the here and now

Yes, I wrote this. My inspiration comes from the masses, who all deserve better lives than what they do have now!
My class didn't use it because my friend Lea had found a piece more suited for the speech choir. The problem was, I hadn't found the right voice blending for this poem. This is directed towards everyone, especially the masses!

-nodsnods- Yea yea O: STILL! I THINK THIS POEM NEEDS TO BE PUBLISHED T_T
Piece more suited...? IDK. this seems PRETTY suited!

speech choir??
What's that?? =w=

Good message, Angelo. Very inspirational.
But it doesn't have rhyme scheme or meter, like at all ^^'
This was freeform then?

=w= I dunno why but freeform poetry with no rhyme or meter irks me when I read it XD
But the message in this is good.

A speech choir is a class activity wherein the entire class recites a poem that emphasizes voice blending and articulation.

I tend to have a mastery of the freeform, hence poems like this.

The people deserve better than what we have now!
As far as publishing is concerned, my friends Lea and Michael will take care of it.

@ Koko-chan :: right right :3 that's what freeform poetry is usually =w=

@ Angelo :: ahhh, yeah that's why it wasn't suitable for Speech Choice then =w= It doesn't really role off the tongue the way that kind of thing should.
But it's still good ^^

That is true. Frankly, I'm okay with the fact that they didn't choose this poem. Still, if me and my friends play it right, we would be able to publish this poem before the May 2010 elections.
