Amazing Grace

By Choco-chan

Prologue

6 years ago:

You’re such a stupid child!” my father yelled at me as he grabbed me and threw me at the wall. My body met the hard surface and fell to the ground. Unable to fight back, I laid there lifelessly. My dry lips craved for water, oh how parched I was. My father began to walk away but he turned around and gave me a kick in the stomach. A throbbing sound came out of my mouth as he pulled my hair to make me look at him. “I told you to make dinner, not burn the food! Do you know how much money that costs?!” I just stared at him with my unemotional eyes. He growled at me and slapped me, my body meeting the hard floor again. “If only your mother was here! You’re so useless, Rosaleen!” He exited the kitchen. I slowly lifted my body off the ground and used my left over strength to walk to my room and lie down on my bed.

I cried my heart out and sobbed into my pillow. I wish I could die. The next day, I woke up and found my father sitting on my bed, staring at the ground. I sat up and he looked up at me.

What?” I asked him as he glared at me. He seemed annoyed.

Don’t use that tone of voice with me,” he raised his hand and I closed my eyes, ready for the slap. Nothing. I opened my eyes and saw his hand frozen in midair. He sighed and let his hand fall and dangle at his side. “We’re going to the orphanage.” I stared at him. I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. I chose neither. He seemed unhappy with that. “Pack up your dang things and meet me out front.” He told me and left my room. I sighed and packed up all of my belongings. I dressed up in a pink polka dot dress my mother gave me before she died. I took my locket and tied it around my neck. I opened it and stared at the picture of my mother in it. I closed it and hugged it to myself.

My father put my stuff in the back of his truck as I sat in the passenger seat. He entered the car and sat in the driver’s seat, staring at my locket. He looked away and began driving. I watched the scenery change until we were finally in front of the orphanage. Some kids playing outside stared up at us as we got out of the car and walked through the open doors of the orphanage. My father and I were sitting near the office until a woman came out and said she’s ready.

Stay here,” my father ordered me and I nodded as he walked inside the office. As soon as he walked in, I got off my chair and wandered around the orphanage. There were a lot of kids running around the hallways. I smiled at them and I heard something. What was it? Music? I listened to it carefully and it became louder and louder as I walked toward it. I could hear it crystal clear as I stopped in front of a door that said, “Music Room.” I listened to a piano playing and a voice singing. A male voice. Young and nice to hear. I turned the knob of the door. When I entered that room, my mind was straight on two things: that beautiful song and the boy who sang it.

Sunshine from the window shone on my eyes. I put my hand up to block it. I couldn’t see the boy clearly. But I saw him look up at me while he was playing the piano. He sang wonderfully and smiled at me. I was amazed. Next thing I knew, my father appeared behind me and spun me around.

What did I tell you?” he grabbed me and made me walk alongside him. I turned my head to stare at the boy again. He waved and sang the beginning of the song again:

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind, but now I see…”

Chapter 1

From this day on, you are no longer my child so leave!” my father yelled at me and threw my bag outside with ease. I stared at him with hatred, like I’ve always done ever since my mother died.

Gladly!” I screamed back at him and he made an angry face at me. Before I knew it, he walked up to me and slapped me. I glared at him as I rubbed my red cheek.

That’s my goodbye!” he told me and pushed me out of his face. “Now get the hell off my property!” I angrily grabbed my bag and stomped away.

I stopped from afar and screamed, "I HOPE YOU DIE!!!” I had let it all out and felt relieved at last. Now the only thing left to do with my life is…complete my dream.

My name’s Rosaleen and I’m sixteen going on seventeen. People think I’m unusual because of my red hair and silver eyes. Because of that, I’m proud of being different. Since that day, six years ago, my only dream was to hear that song and to meet the boy who sang it. As I got older, I learned that the song was called Amazing Grace. It was written by a man who lost his way and found it again. I had learned the lyrics easily because I would sing it everyday. I’m not a very good singer, but the song calms me down whenever I need it.

I was finally kicked out of the house because my father had signed a contract saying he owns me and is able to kick me out of the house when I reach the age of sixteen. And guess what? My birthday is today and I’m finally sixteen. What a nice birthday present I got from my daddy. I was being sarcastic there if you didn’t know.

Are you curious about what happened six years ago after I heard that boy sing Amazing Grace? Of course you are! Well, I was dragged out of the orphanage by my father. As we rode home, he told me that the owner of the orphanage couldn’t accept any more kids and surely he was ticked off at that woman. When we got home, my father forced me to kneel down on grits for an hour straight for disobeying him. It hurt so much and he even watched me go through the pain like it was nothing. I had cuts on my knees after that and had to wash it while my daddy wasn’t paying attention. It stung. It took months for that to heal since we didn’t have any medicine. That’s what happened. Don’t you just hate my daddy?

I walked down the road, no where to go with nothing in mind. I felt lonely but it was better than getting abused by your own father. I sang to myself while staring at the rocks below me, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
T'was grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
the hour I first believed…
” I continued and when I reached the ending of the song, I looked up at the sunlight that shone upon me. I closed my eyes and embraced the warmth. I saddened at the idea that grace would never appear before me.

Excuse me, miss?” a voice said and I opened my eyes and met the brown one’s of a woman. Her hair was the exact color of chocolate. She looked young, but was married which you could tell by her diamond ring on her ring finger.

Yes?” I asked politely. She stared at my red hair which everybody does when they first meet me. Next thing, she was mesmerized by my silver eyes that felt like it looked right through her.

I was wondering…what are you doing out here?” she shyly asked as I caught a glimpse of a squirrel climbing a tree near her.

What are YOU doing out here?” I asked her, curious as well. She thought a bit as a nice breeze blew on us.

I was just wondering around and I saw you from that town down there and I wanted to see why you’re out here alone,” she honestly said as I replayed everything she said in my head. I looked behind her and she was right. There WAS a town down there. I didn’t know that…maybe because I wasn’t paying attention while I was walking. “Now, I ask again: what are you doing out here?” I frowned sadly which made her feel bad. “Ah, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to…

Actually, I want to tell you…” I hesitated for a moment but gave it a try. “I was kicked out of my home so I got no where to go…” Her expression turned to a sad one as I told her that.

Um…” she paused. “Would you like to stay at my house? I have an extra bedroom that is unused…

Really?” I brightened up. She stared at me and giggled.
Yeah,” she smiled back at me and led me to the town she lived in.

I sat down on a chair as I looked at the things around me. It looked decent but at least it’s better than my house. The woman named Desiree went to talk to her husband who was pretty handsome. He had light blond hair and smooth purple eyes. He looked like a nice guy. I looked up at the two who came back with the results.

You can stay,” Desiree’s husband said as Desiree squealed with delight. I smiled at that. “But, you have to help us around the house and attend church school.

Church…school?” I asked, confused. He nodded.
What? You’ve never went to school before?” Desiree questioned.

Of course I went to school…but not church school…” I said, scratching the back of my head.

Well, you’re going to like it,” Desiree confidently told me. “The only different thing in church school is that there’s a church choir and you learn about Jesus and read the bible. It’s exactly like church but it’s school with more subjects.

Sounds…fun…” I said, not knowing what to say.

Anyways, welcome to our house. Need a tour?” Desiree’s husband asked.

Ah, no thanks. I’ll learn which room is which later on. And um…what’s your name?” I asked him.

Paul,” he said. I shook his hand which was smooth like baby’s skin.

By the way, you haven’t told us your name yet.” Desiree said with a face. I laughed.

Really? Well, my name’s Rosaleen, call me Rose if you want.” I told them.

Rose…just like the color of your hair…” Desiree easily memorized my name…I mean my nickname. “Your name fits you perfectly. Nice to meet you, Rose.

Nice to meet you guys too,” I said and we went to eat dinner together. I ate my first roasted duck which kind of tastes like chicken. Roasted duck was one of Paul’s specialty. It was so good, and I wasn’t surprised when Desiree told me that he’s a chef.

After dinner, I helped Desiree wash the dishes and brushed my teeth after that. I said good night to Desiree and Paul then went to bed with a happy expression. Before falling asleep, I thought about church school. It sounded really fun. Maybe I would make new friends which I didn’t have at my old school. I was hated in my old school for being different. A thought appeared in my head. What if that boy went to the church school? Desiree did say that there was a church choir and Amazing Grace is a church song. There’s a possibility…but all I can do is hope. I fell asleep peacefully and dreamed about the past where the boy sang Amazing Grace. He had no face…but he had the uniform with the church school’s name on it.
