I think there's a little bit of racism in Japan but it's not only Indians that are being discriminated. From what I heard and read, the society is kinda discriminatory to practically everything else that is not Japanese, Asians included. Even the corporate world has their "Japanese bosses only" and doesn't allow MNC's or foreign firms to buy out local firms.

uh did you mean all muslims are extremists..? (regarding the first post)

i dont really know about the stereotypes they have in Japan, but it would probably be the same stereotypes in most areas..
Everywhere will have people that are racist. I would think Japan would be less tolerant to foreigners because there arent many there. You'd most likely stick out like a sore thumb.
But that shouldnt stop you. You should visit and see how you like it. Everyone has different experiences based on how they handle the situation.

no i didnt mean all muslims are exreamists... i only ment the extremists (people who take their religion to a different level)

thanks for that XD ill probs take a holiday there first for a few weeks just to see what its like

Ok there are alot of threads about blacks and racism but im woundering if racism towards Indians are as high in Japan. Im indian myself and these past few years with issues of terrorism rising, some STUPID people have started to look at me like im going to bomb them or somthing stupid like that. (im not even muslim (extremist) im hindu) As i am learning japanese and maybe in a few years time i might like to live over there for about a year or so to get a feel for different cultures. i was wondering how much racism is actually over in Japan about indians and what the general stereotype for indians are over there.

HI! I thought i was the only one! There are indians here. Yay!

Back to business! I get that a lot. I heard that some stopid people think that Indians= Muslims. They need to back to special class, i tell you. My uncle was a lecturer there and he said he felt very left out but he eventually got their respect as he can speak fluent Japanese and most of all you must 'blend in' with their culture, style and 'ways'. I was thinking of living there too but the currency is too high there. Imagine this, 30000 yen is equivalent to US$ 250-270!! But there are mangas/anime there...so...XD

yah there's racism there... my grandmother told me. However, it's not on its highest degree. Usually, Japanese like their own race so they love everything about them. For example, when you hardly speak Nihonggo and you talked to a Nipponjin in English and the Japanese never speak English (almost all Japanese), usually, they'll never entertain you.

Their reason may be is if you came to Japan to live/pursue something, you should adjust yourself on your environment and learn to speak Japanese and they should not the only one to adjust (remember you are a visitor).

But, racism is common to other races especially if you visit to their place. Just accept it and be proud of what you are.

also if you look asian (some malay, indian friends i know actually look like the younger japanese, half or pure-blood!) and if you speak good japanese you might even get mistaken for their own race so use it to your advantage! its alot harder for caucasians but i guess they kinda look up to you guys more

yeah... it's true. Because my grand mother used to live there for about ten years. When she was starting there, she always cry coz of nostalgia. She was on a culture shock before...she said that many Japanese hardly speak English so it was hard for her to have a friend there on her place before.

But, as time pass by, she's gaining friends. She told me that Japanese are always confident of their race that's why it's hard for them to appreciate other races/foreigners.
However, as she goes on, her Japanese friends loves/appreciates a lot of Filipino culture because of my grandmother's way of living and her hospitality and happy-go=lucky life.

I get where your coming from because I'm Hindu aswell but my cousin went to Japan for a business trip and he didn't experiance any racism or any general sterotyping, however in the airport they stopped him and took him for an interview because they though he was muslim terroist. Although I do think that some Japanese people are discriminative and perjudice to the other race, so they may keep to themselves and try to avoid contact.

A 'muslim terrorist'. Please dude, don't sound like a friggin idiot. Not all terrorists are Muslims, and even if they said they were, they're not. You can't be Muslim and go around and kill innocent lives. It doesn't work that way.

Now there's a stereotype for you that's all too familiar for Arab Muslims *sigh*
