So, I am trying to plan my trip to Japan and I need to figure out exactly where I want to go. I can stay up to two weeks and I was hoping I could get some insights so I could make the best use of my time while I am there. I really want to visit a hot spring, visit Mt. Fuji, go to Kyoto, but those are my only "for sures". Can anyone help me with some recommendations of places to visit, where to stay, etc. Oh, and also, I would most likely have to go during the summer months due to my job. Please help me!!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you shweebs.

I'll be in Japan at the end of march and i'm going unguided, just wandering the streets basically I have all my hotels and stuff like that booked, but I'm looking for some "off the beaten path" cool places to go.. restaurants, arcades, a particular store or cafe, bar/nightclub ... anything really. I'll be in Tokyo for 5 days, Hiroshima, Kyoto mainly.

Anyone have suggestions for me or shweebs??

Addresses would be a great addition if you do have a suggestion

Yeah, I went to a couple different travel agencies and looked at brocures and stuff but nothing really caught my attention. I couldn't even find anything about hot springs or things that I generally associate with the culture cause of the anime I watch (whether those are wrong assumptions or not).

Both TidalC and I could really use some help....

I booked all of my hotels through a japanese travel agency. If we don't get any specific help through this thread, I'll let you know if I find anything out, or, if it comes to it... i'll post here in April after my trip and say what was good and what wasn't.

I do have one bit of advice though.. I've been using Google Earth/Google Maps to plan a lot of my journey. I've been looking up addresses of places I want to visit.. then going down to street level and marking them on the map. This way you can figure out your directions on how to get there, street view over there in google maps is actually very very good, check it out.. this is the kinda stuff i've been looking for and marking.

for example --- check it out... (let it load the street view)

Hey guys - you sound like me - I'm going next summer as well.
A website with a ton of useful information is Japan-Guide.
Lots of travel and attraction information.
Also part of their site is for "penpals" etc... I've gotten a couple great penpals in cities I'm going to visit. A few months is enough time to build up a relationship, exchange language - many people are excited at the chance to play "tour guide" for their hometown. Look thru the ads for someone your age in the areas you want to visit - and place a ad yourself explaining your situation. So many people really enjoy helping, as well as learning about where you live, etc, etc... check it out:

Good luck!
