Racial Profiling vs. Affirmative Action
Posted 12/30/09
I remember vaguely in my theories of justice class we discussed about racial profiling adn affirmative action. This one girl kept insisting that they were completely different, that racial profiling was something negative while affirmative action was aiming for something positive. She also said that racial profiling shouldn't be allow, but affirmative action is necessary.

I disagreed, saying that if you agree with affirmative action, you also agree with racial profiling because really, they both use race as a proxy. In addition, affirmative action doesn't necessarily produce positive results and racial profiling doesn't always produce negetive outcomes.

Just wanted to see what you think. Are they really actually the same? Or are they completely different?

I don't know if there's a topic on this already. And sorry if what I wrote made no sense. I was in a rush.

I think human racial profiling can be done in a neutral way scientifically, just by subjecting EVERY single human race with the exact same profiling method.

However IMO, affirmative actions towards ANY specific race is only a political process of replacing an existing set of racial stereotypes and prejudices, with another set of racial stereotypes and prejudices.

In a way affirmative action is indirect racial profiling. Say, because I am white I loose a job because someone from another race was selected due to affirmative action. It would mean that I was indirectly racially profiled because my race was not what the affirmative action program was trying to promote. Affirmative action and racial profiling are not the same thing, but they act under the same wrong principal that is racial selection. You are profiled because you were selected due to your race, or you were selected/received special/better treatment because of your race. Both are wrong and both are racist. Treating someone special because of their race is just as wrong as treating someone negatively because of their race.

Affirmative action is bullshit. The police hit the streets primarily just to vent their prejudices on anyone they want since they have the all-powerful diplomatic immunity on their side. Police will rape, torture, murder and thieve from minorities in all nations. Perhaps there needs to be a police force for when cops turn corrupt. Such a thing is only whimsy.
