Fatal Frame

The game revolves around a girl named Miku Hinasaki, who goes to the supposedly haunted Himuro Mansion to search for Mafuyu, her older brother. Mafuyu has been missing for almost one week, after visiting Himuro Mansion to look for his mentor, Junsei Takamine. He had also gone missing in the mansion, together with his assistant and editor, whilst conducting research for a new novel.

As Miku explores deeper into the mansion, she eventually learns about the dark secrets behind the enormous mansion and about the malignant spirit of Kirie, who had kidnapped Mafuyu because of his strong resemblance to her former lover, a young man who visited the mansion. Although Miku manages to rescue Mafuyu in the end of the game, Mafuyu tells her that he must stay at Kirie's side so that she will not be alone again. Afterwards, the underground cavern crumbles and Mafuyu disappears together with Kirie. After she escapes, Miku sees the entrapped spirits of the mansion being released and floating into the night air. Miku explains that after that day she stopped seeing things that normal people don't see.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura are visiting the spot where they used to play as children, which is due to be swallowed by a dam soon, when Mayu, who walks with a limp after a childhood accident, follows a mysterious crimson butterfly deep into the woods. Mio, concerned for her twin, follows, and the two girls are led to a village shrouded in fog. While it seems abandoned, the twins soon realize that the tortured souls of the dead roam, forever reliving the day of the failed ceremony that trapped them in this state.

Mayu soon falls under the village's spell and, beckoned by the crimson butterflies, she leads her sister deeper into the village. As Mio chases after her, she slowly learns of the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, the failure of which caused the disaster known as the Repentance, which shrouded the village in darkness. Under the village there is a system of tunnels, and at its deepest point there is a deep hole called the Hellish Abyss, where the souls of the dead collect. In order to keep this hole sealed, a pair of twins born in the village is required to perform a ritual approximately every decade, in which the elder twin strangles the younger, after which the soul of the younger twin stays to guard the village as a crimson butterfly.

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

The game follows Rei Kurosawa, a 23 year old freelance photographer. Her fiancé, Yuu, died in a car accident she caused by driving carelessly months before.

While on a freelance assignment taking pictures of a supposedly haunted mansion with her assistant Miku Hinasaki, the heroine of the first Fatal Frame game, she sees her deceased fiancé Yuu in a hallway after taking a picture of it, after which she has a daydream of a snowy manor. After she returns home and develops the photo she took, an image of Yuu appears in the photograph. After this, Rei begins having strange recurring dreams. In these dreams, she finds herself at an old Japanese manor house during a heavy snowfall and observes her fiancé entering the house. Seeking him, she follows his figure inside, where the dream becomes a nightmare. Waking up gasping from a frightening encounter, in which she was touched by a female ghost covered in tattoos, Rei notices a mysterious bruise appear on her body, which begins to spread the more she dreams to form a snake and holly tattoo, just like the one on the woman and some of the other ghosts.

As the plot progresses, Rei explores more and more of the manor, encountering greater resistance from the ghosts holding it and discovering the many gruesome rituals practised at the old mansion from decades before. She begins to receive letters from Kei Amakura, a non-fiction writer and uncle of Mio and Mayu from Fatal Frame II, who was Yuu's friend and has not been informed of his death. Kei writes in his letters that he and Mio both have the curse, and continues to send on his research and call Rei, before finally visiting Rei's house in person. During this time, Rei discovers that Miku is also having the same dreams as she is and is being consumed by the same curse.
