Of my favourites:
Welcome to the NHK! - Chris Patton is great as Sato, also Greg Ayres as Yamazaki which works very well
Fullmetal Alchemist
Azumanga Daioh - Osaka's texan accent fits her personality so very well, also Yukari and Nyamo are Hitomi and Megumi from WttNHK!.
Haibane Renmei

Generally I'll watch subbed if the dub is awful or if whoever I'm watching it with wants to, but certain titles have such good dubs that I will fight for it.

Basically I can typically only watch an anime in the format I originally watched it in because if I try to watch it in one format and switch to the other everything sounds wrong. The exception to that being sailor moon because the dub version of Serena's daughter is just WAY too annoying so I can watch Sailor Moon in either form. However, that basically means Evangelion, Slayers, Dragonball(all of them), Pokemon, Digimon, Inuyasha, and a few others I HAVE to watch in dub form.

Beyond a shred of doubt, it's Fruits Basket. The voice acting in that series trumps its japanes counterpart and is one of the reasons I like the show. (it also gives me hope for decent dubing). Last exile has a decent dubbing which I prefer to the original.

Appleseed (the movie) had some decent voice acting as well (wouldn't say phenomenal, but it was reasonable).

95% of anime I watch is Japanese w/ English subtitles however...

There's a few I have not using English dubbed

Ghost in the shell stand alone complex - Japanese voice actress for the Major doesn't sound right to me
Cowboy bebop - 1st saw in English and just sounds too weird for me in japanese
Gundam Wing - Main character's voice is way to high pitched for my taste.

An observation... I don't understand why a lot of English female voice actress always have to raise/amp up the pitch over the Japanese voice actress. It's worse when the character is high strung / energetic to begin with.

The main character in Excel Saga comes to mind... I can't not listen to it in English, I almost would say my ears would bleed.

Having trouble finding same scene examples.

I watched the japanese version of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and I was pretty horrified. Then I watched the English dub on youtube, and it was sooooo much better.

I can watch either

I tend to go through phases of watching subbed, then dubbed, and whichever I'm watching at the time seems better to me XD

The first anime that I ever watched, like Naruto and Bleach I watched dubbed, but I switched to subbed and now I can't go back

I grew up at a time when Anime dubbed was pretty awful. As such, watching Anime in any language other than Japanese (with English subtitles) feels "wrong" to me. I'm so used to watching stuff subtitled, that it feels "weird" if I DON'T have subtitles on! (Even on TV!!) I'm weird, I know.

It's not the voice actresses that do it, it's the director. Excel Excel is supposed to be like that. Loud and annoying, both versions portray that very well in their own ways.

Same scene samples:

Excel Goes to America English dub Start at 4:00 and end at 5:32 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJQjiM7eWVM

Excel Goes to America Japanese original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x39Jp-z61M

Fun trivia: The Japanese voice actress for Excel, Kotono Mitsuishi, is also the voice of Sailor Moon from Sailor Moon and the voice of Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The English voice actress for Excel was Jessica Calvello then was replaced by Larissa Wolcott from episode 13 and onward. The reason being she had (temporarily, not permanently) damaged her vocal cords and couldn't continue the role without risk of more serious injury. It's because a character like Excel requires an ample amount of rest in between voice takes and since the dubbing of the show went by faster than they had originally planned the voice actress, Calvello, got practically no time to take a breather. The voice you hear in the above sample is the second English voice actress, Wolcott, and her rendition of Excel is great as well. I like all three versions of Excel personally, they all match her nicely.
