Gender Blender Popularity
Posted 1/6/10
Have you noticed? That "gender blender" genre popularity is different in Asian countries? Although gender blender in dramas is most commonly a girl pretending to be a guy but I think it has something to do with how the culture feels towards homosexuality.

For example, Japan is more accepting and open towards it - you can see it in their media and manga genre such as shounen ai and yaoi. In Taiwan it's also acceptable, but not as open as in Japan. Hana Kimi for example, has a Japanese and Taiwanese version. But I don't think there will ever be a Korean version.

Boys Before Flowers is a Korean drama adapted from a Japanese manga and is popular so perhaps it is expected that Hana Kimi will also be made into a Korean drama. But gender blender is not popular in Korea at all. You can see it by the low view ratings of You're Beautiful. It's hugely popular in the internet but not in Korea.

So what are your views on gender blender?

u kno its gender bender right? not gender blender. gender bender is pretty popular in korea too. youre beautiful actually did a lot better than expected. it was doomed to fail cuz it was in the same time slot as iris but the fact that it didnt actually means it was successful.it only had low ratings cuz it debuted at the wrong time. YB was really popular among teens. also, coffee prince was a huge success in korea and it was a gender bender. yah japanese ppl r more accepting but that doesnt mean koreans arent. korean society is much more open and accepting nowadays than it used to be. i think some of the things u wrote are biased and derogatory

Gender Bender doesn't count as homosexuality because they are not gay. There just girls dress up as guys.
