Don't you think that defeats crunchyroll's purpose???

Seems like whichever DVD licensee or broadcast rights holder is sitting on the streaming rights without using them does not put "Crunchyroll's purpose" very high up on its list.

From the Japanese perspective, around 2003 they were getting over 10% of their revenue from the US market, and the US market has dropped by over 30%, so they may be more concerned about the US market (consider OnePiece and Bleach licensed streaming on Hulu from FUNimation and VIZ respectively). But broadband penetration AND SPEED is better in most of Europe than the US - the Japanese industry is missing a serious opportunity to get access to the EU market as a whole.

Seriously though, what is crunchyroll expecting with only 6 new series? With Naruto and Fairytail there will be 8 new series here. I'm only going to watch 3 of the 8 series. This is a depressing season for crunchyroll. They should try to get Baka to Test or even Dance in the Vampire Bund. Something at least. I'm disappointed

I noticed the word "shojo" in crunchy's description on this thread, but the responses in favor of this show seem to all be from guys. Is this a fanservice show? I noticed that most of the character designs have that generic bobblehead look that indicates moe. Makes me wonder if I should even bother wasting 24 minutes to find out...

One of the issues is that there's just less anime this year, because of the economy and declining DVD sales/profits. Last year's Winter season there were 23 new non-children's TV anime, this year there are only 15.

And I like CrunchyRoll's direction this season of focusing on quality over quantity. Quality is subjective, of course, but last season they had none of the shows I wanted to watch, and a bunch of C-list junk. This year they have all the shows I want to watch (and Chu-bra, hurr). If you're really interested in Vampire Bund, you can read the manga which Seven Seas is releasing in English.

Also, they might announce more shows later. Sometimes CR is just late in getting the contract worked out (like they already are a bit with Soranowoto. Also, like they were last season with that pastry show).

Plus, there are more continuing shows than just Naruto and Fairytale. Book of Bantorra, for one. I don't know all of them because I haven't been watching anything live last season.

It has a bit of a moe style, but it is part of that special "Anime no Chikara" block on TV Tokyo. The whole point of that is allowing directors to do original stories in a more artistic way, and it's likely to go in a more Haibane Renmei-esque direction. I wouldn't let myself get turned off it just from a few screen shots.

Thanks, that helps. I'll probably give it a try then. I was hoping to get two shows out of the five announcements. If I end up liking this one I'll have three (including Durarara and Cobra). That would exceed my expectations for the winter cr announcements.

There are only 15 new series total - there's normally more new series launched in Fall than in Winter, and with the weak sales of DVD's in Japan, there are also going to be fewer anime series total.

Indeed, its likely that they DID try to get more than they got - they can only stream the ones that the rights owners agree to license to them for streaming.

And of course, if you look at the Winter 2010 page under the Anime link, in addition to the 6 new ones, they have 7 series that are continuing ... Fairy Tale, Gintama, Hanasakeru Seishonen (its on three week break, but continuing), Kassan, Naruto, Katetekyo Hitman Reborn, Tegami Bachi The Letter Bee, Book of Bantorra (which I think is hilarious), and Yumeiro Patissiere.

What I would really like to see would be for CR to try to get some NON-US streaming rights to some of the series that stream in the US on Hulu, and stream to non-US members directly from CR while streaming to US members as a Hulu partner. Even though the Hulu streams are normally about a week late, I'm sure that they could work out a per episode watched deal with Hulu to keep the ads off the streams watched by US CR anime members. Other than show at a time deals, that's the only way I can see to get a large amount of new content.

Cool, something new. Maybe I'll watch it later.
