DPJ rejects call to summon Hatoyama's mother, Ozawa over fund scandals

The Democratic Party of Japan will reject the opposition Liberal Democratic Party’s demand that Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s mother and DPJ Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa testify in the Diet about fund scandals, DPJ Acting Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi said Friday. ‘‘We do not have to accept the LDP’s request,’’ said Koshiishi, who also heads the party’s caucus in the House of Councillors.
The LDP has indicated it will ask the Diet to summon Hatoyama’s mother and Ozawa as unsworn witnesses during the ordinary Diet Session from Jan 18. One of Hatoyama’s former secretaries is charged with overstating individual donations and omitting contributions from the prime minister’s mother and sister in his political funds reports, while Ozawa has been embroiled in alleged accounting irregularities at his fund management body.
